2017 Demystifying Indigenous Business Conference

Conference details: May 24-25, 2017 Fort Garry Hotel Winnipeg, Manitoba Last year, we launched a one-of-a-kind conference focusing on bridging the gap between mainstream and Indigenous business. Now, we are returning for another successful event. You can look forward to a lineup of panels, keynotes, luncheons and networking opportunities with business and community professionals who are interested in gaining knowledge and skills that will put them ahead of their competition in developing cultural competencies to foster growth and economic development with Indigenous individuals, communities and organizations.

Conference Day 1 – May 24, 2017

#1: INDIGENOUS BUSINESS – PENETRATING THE LANDSCAPE – PANEL Indigenous Business is present, growing, and perched to create impact at various levels. Attend this session to hear how best to join this group in creating economic development and prosperity for all involved. #2: WE ARE ALL TREATY PEOPLE…WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Often times, mainstream business people simply do not understand or are not aware of practises, customs, or traditions that are common amongst Indigenous people. Because of this, business people may come across as being racist or just plain ignorant. Join the group to learn what is really going on, what the custom and practise really is all about so that you will be better informed and better prepared to create dialogue. #3: WHAT IS AN URBAN RESERVE AND HOW CAN YOU BE A PART OF IT? The term Urban Reserve has been used often in many conversations. Yet, the true understanding of what it is and how it can benefi t all involved isn’t apparent. Join others in learning what an Urban Reserve can be and how you can be involved! #4: TREATIES CLARIFIED AND HOW THEY ARE RELEVANT TODAY Treaties have been around for many, many years. In fact, in some cases, longer than certain laws have existed. Join in and learn how these treaties have shaped the Indigenous climate & current environment for everyone.

#5: URBAN RESERVES VS RURAL RESERVES – RECOGNIZING THE OPPORTUNITY IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD Join in to learn the meaning of both, why we continue to have both in our country, why they should exist and how they can both exist to provide community and success to mainstream and Indigenous groups. #6: UNDERSTANDING INDIGENOUS MYTHS – NO TAXES? EVERYTHING IS FREE? – PANEL Over the years there have been many myths that simply are not true. Yet, these myths have become beliefs that have continued to incorrectly label Indigenous people as having benefi ts that the mainstream do not. Join our panel to uncover where the myth ends and the truth begins to better understand the Indigenous environment. #7: INDIGENOUS PARTNERSHIPS THAT WORK – TRUE SUCCESS STORIES – PANEL Case examples of success will be presented by real business partners and Indigenous groups. Learn what worked, what mistakes or assumptions were addressed, and what you can do to create similar partnerships. #8: TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION RECOMMENDATIONS – UPDATE The Truth and Reconciliation Commission brought forward many recommendations.
