Estates Paralegal

The Public Guardian and Trustee of BC (PGT) is an independent statutory corporation sole and acts under provincial legislation to protect the legal rights and interests of children, vulnerable adults and deceased and missing persons.  As a result of obligations created by statute, the PGT exercises quasi-judicial authority in specified situations.  In addition, the PGT is called upon to provide independent comments to the Court when the legal or financial interests of minors, adults under a mental disability or estates are at risk. The PGT is independent of government in its case-related decision making responsibilities.

The Child and Youth Services Division provides direct service to vulnerable children and youth under such authorities as Property Guardian, Trustee, Litigation Guardian and also provides legal protective review and monitoring services. In all of these capacities, Child and Youth Services discharges the Public Guardian and Trustee’s duties as a substitute decision maker in the context of a philosophy of service which envisions that a decision made on behalf of vulnerable children or youth is in their best interest.

The Estates Paralegal evaluates Notices for the Province of BC, ensuring compliance with probate requirements and relevant Acts, legislation, policies and procedures, in a quasi-judicial capacity, in order to identify and protect the legal interests of children and/or vulnerable adults under a variety of statutes.  This includes conducting legal research of relevant statute and case law pertaining to questions of law, procedure and quantum.  The position is also responsible for supervising legal administrative support staff.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Recognized Paralegal Certificate; OR
  • University Degree in behavioural sciences, law, political science or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 3 years of satisfactory work experience in a legal environment; and
  • Experience using word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with experience supervising staff.
