Full-Time Faculty Position
The Pas, Manitoba
University College of the North (UCN) is committed to building a workforce that is representative of the populations we serve. Applications are invited from individuals who have a demonstrated interest and ability to work with Indigenous learners and mature students.
The Position: This position involves teaching the core curriculum; mentoring students; liaising with Indigenous communities and organizations; and participating in other program functions. The successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in teaching and scholarship. Instruction may occur in the evenings and on weekends. Instructors are responsible for related duties including classroom management, student supervision, maintenance of student records and grades, curriculum refinement and other administrative tasks.
- A permanent Manitoba Teaching Certificate (or equivalent from another jurisdiction)
- A Doctorate in Education (Indigenous perspectives, special education/diverse learning strategies, land-based methods) to be considered for the Assistant or Associate professor; applicants with Master’s degrees in Education and significant relevant experience may be considered for an Instructor classification
- A minimum of five years teaching experience in First Nations or public schools (K-12)
- Demonstrated creative and culturally-relevant instructional practices within an Indigenous perspective; ability to learn from and work with Elders
- Experience in program/curriculum development at the middle years’ level from the following: Literacy & Numeracy Development, Educational Technologies and/or land or placed based learning
- Experience supervising pre-service practicum for student teachers
- Effective problem solving and analytical skills
- Effective communication skills (both oral and written)
- Effective interpersonal skills
- Effective management and organizational skills
- Experience in using current learning technologies and current computer applications
- Demonstrated ability to understand cultural influences and issues specific to adult learners in northern communities
- Personal experience and/or knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures
- The ability to speak an Indigenous language
- Experience as an administrator in the school system
- Experience with a post-secondary teacher education program
- Demonstrated record of research
- Experience in the public school system mentoring new teachers
- Familiarity with Indigenous cultural ceremony
Conditions of Employment:
- Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Travel to remote and northern communities is required
