  • This position is accountable for all aspects of risk, control and business process evaluation within HSBC Bank Canada (HBCA) with a focus on either Global Businesses, Global Functions or HTS. In this respect, the incumbent works with staff members at all levels of HBCA and other Group entities to provide assurance that the Group’s risks are being managed effectively. Proactive consultation with our internal clients and the identification of the monetary and reputational risks by the Bank and its subsidiaries is required. Constructive and definitive recommendations / comments on the reviewed areas are made to enhance the organization’s capacity to manage risk and to reduce inefficiencies.
  • This is a key management position within Audit Canada requiring the incumbent to manage relations with senior HBCA executives as well as the Bank’s Relationship Manager at OSFI and KPMG Partners. Further, this position is a key contact for Group and North American (AUN) audit initiatives.
  • This position assists with the management the Audit Team, which is responsible for the audit process of the highest risk areas within HBCA as well as critical global projects.
  • This position also provides direct support to the SVP and Chief Auditor through the accumulation of audit information for Group and Committee reporting as well as acting as a delegate in committee meetings where necessary.

Principal Accountabilities: Key activities and decision making areas

Impact on the Business

  • The scope of the mandate covers all Global Businesses, Global Functions and HTS within HSBC Bank Canada. Decisions relating to audit recommendations and risk assessments can have a material impact on both the business itself and the individual staff within the business

Customers / Stakeholders

  • Drive annual plan development and completion; manage to plan and seek process improvements to increase productivity, efficiency and contribution to economic profit without impacting effectiveness.
  • Professionally assess the adequacy and effectiveness of internal control methods utilized to contain organizational risks, anticipating, identifying and evaluating risks to corporate assets, customer liabilities and activities.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • As part of the management team, take a proactive approach to ensuring the department fulfills its obligations to local and Group management as well as external stakeholders and the Audit Committee.
  • Lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices. Cultivate an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand and values.
  • Manage, motivate, and mentor staff members.
  • As part of the management team, take a proactive approach to ensuring the department fulfills its obligations to local and Group management as well as external stakeholders and the Audit Committee.
  • Through ongoing monitoring of the internal and external environment along with consultation with Business and Department Heads, develop and manage a risk-based annual audit plan, with a systematic, documented follow-up program for significant audit comments to eliminate control risks.
  • Ensure your team operates in accordance with Group Audit Standards as outlined in the Group Audit Standards Manual (GASM) as well as regional guidelines as outlined in the AUN Instruction Manual.
  • Ensure an efficient audit process through utilization of joint audits where appropriate, utilizing the strengths of IT Audit, Group Audit as well as local Internal Control Teams.
  • Maintain currency on business organizational and technological events, risks and regulatory changes to ensure audit process integrity, innovation and service quality.
  • Lead and develop an effective team through communication, performance management, development plans and reward/recognition practices.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the HSBC brand.

Operational Effectiveness & Control

  • Provide consulting services and represent Internal Audit in meetings with line businesses on control matters as and when required.
  • Implement Group policy locally: maintain internal control standards through timely action on audit points; ensure employees apply compliance, internal and operational risk controls in accordance with HSBC or regulatory standards and policies; and optimize relations with regulators by addressing any issues. Emphasize and model human resources and other HSBC polices in order to create an ethical, safe and supportive work environment.
  • Maintain and/or enhance skills through the completion of at least 7 days of relevant training each year.
  • Complete other responsibilities, as assigned by the Chief Auditor
  • To implement the Group compliance policy locally by containing compliance risk in liaison with the Head of Group Compliance, Global Business Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer, ensuring adequate compliance resources and training, fostering a compliance culture and optimizing relations with regulators.
  • Ensure that all employees are aware of and effectively identify and manage applicable money laundering (ML), terrorist financing (TF), sanctions and reputational risks.
  • Complete other responsibilities, as assigned.

Role Context

  • The incumbent has full authority over audit matters relating to HBCA and subsidiaries within the framework and guideline of Group Audit.
  • The authority of this position is inherited from the Internal Audit Mandate. This includes the right and authority to examine all books, records, procedures, systems, applications, and any areas under examination. The function is a management process, which extends beyond the evaluation of control and of audit scope based on risk assessment and consistent with Group auditing standards.
  • This position has a great deal of autonomy and the incumbent will be required make decisions to ensure the annual audit plan is successfully executed, staff utilization is effective and costs are within budget for each audit.
  • The decisions made at this level have a significant and material impact on the Corporate Governance and Control structure within HBCA.

Management of Risk

  • Shall be responsible for overseeing and ensuring that risk standards are in accordance with the Group Standards Manual (GSM) and appropriate Function Instructional Manuals (FIMs). Robust local risk policies Business Instruction Manuals (BIMs) to be in place and reviewed regularly for their ongoing adequacy.

Observation of Internal Controls

  • Maintains HSBC internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators.


This position requires an individual with:

  • Exemplary core values, integrity and business ethics.
  • Broad and superior knowledge of banking operations and regulatory requirements gained through at least 10 years of progressive management experience.
  • Professional accounting (CA, CGA, CMA) and auditing (CIA, CISA) accreditation and/or equivalent management/audit experience.
  • Ability to affect change through influence and negotiation with HSBC staff up to and including the SVP (GCB 2) level.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills.
  • Highly developed inter-personal skills with the ability to present ideas to an audience.
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Ability to manage a diverse team in periods of change and adversity.
  • Expert knowledge of the Institute of Internal Auditors International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing.
  • Fundamental knowledge of critical legislation relating HBCA operations such as the Bank Act, Basel and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), etc.
  • A fundamental understanding of HSBC’s Enterprise Wide Risk Management framework.
  • Expert knowledge of HSBC Group Internal Audit policies and procedures as documented in the Group Audit Standards Manual (GASM) and Audit Unit North America Instruction Manual (AUN IM).
  • Expert knowledge of the Group Standards Manual.
  • Good working knowledge applicable Group Functional Instructional Manuals.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Banking rules and regulations as well as knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Canadian regulators.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Banking Administrative and Operational processes and procedures.
  • Good working knowledge of audit software management systems and processes.
  • An understanding of the Bank’s primary Applications and Operating Systems
