Government Communications and Public Engagement (GCPE) is a dynamic, progressive organization that supports the government in its ongoing communication with British Columbians. GCPE leads and coordinates government communications and public engagement through four divisions: Strategic communications, communications operations, government digital experience and corporate operations.

The strategic communications division provides specialized communications support to all ministries, including marketing and advertising, graphic communications, digital communications, events and corporate planning, and writing and content strategy.

The writing and content strategy unit directs and provides writing, message development, and strategic communications support to Government Communications and Public Engagement and government ministries, including communications services for the Office of the Premier.


The Senior Communications Officer works with a creative team to research, write, edit and proofread communications materials and execute high-profile communications projects.

This position ensures all communications materials meet high standards of accuracy, quality and consistency.

The Senior Communications Officer operates in an environment where managing competing priorities, collaborating with inter-departmental teams, and handling confidential matters are the norm.

The incumbent must exercise critical thinking, independent decision-making, and problem solving to deliver on government’s mandate and strategic communications objectives.


  • Manage and coordinate complex, sensitive and/or high-profile communications projects
  • Write and edit compelling, informative and strategic communications products for internal and external audiences
  • Liaise with senior GCPE staff to identify strategic messaging and content requirements
  • Prepare speeches, news releases, statements, key messages, opinion editorials, feature articles, backgrounders and other materials as directed
  • Apply the GCPE style guide and other quality and style standards for government communications
  • Provide editorial advice and direction to ministry-based GCPE employees
  • Maintain high standards of quality, accuracy and consistency
  • Act in the absence of the Manager, Writing and Content Strategy, as required


  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Communications, Writing, English, Journalism, or a related field and a minimum of three years of experience in public relations, writing or communications. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing communications materials for print and digital channels.
  • Demonstrated experience working with teams or stakeholders to deliver communications strategies or products.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, sensitive or high-profile communications projects.
  • Experience in government communications or experience working in communications for a large organization is considered an asset.
  • Comfortable in fast-paced settings demanding a high level of efficiency.
  • Ability to adapt and respond to constantly evolving priorities of daily operations.
  • Highly developed organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills for establishing effective relationships with management, employees, and the public and working cooperatively with others to achieve results.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to exercise considerable judgement in the performance of duties and in the establishment of priorities.
  • Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as required by the ministry.
