Bilingual Interpretive Guide – Permanent and temporary part time positions available
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

Each visitor has access to a fully reinvented museum experience that reflects a design approach that sets new Canadian and world standards for inclusion and universal accessibility.
We are seeking talented individuals who are motivated to share their passion and commitment to join our team. Together, we aim to enhance the public’s understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others, and to encourage reflection and dialogue.
- Delivery of standard tours and program offerings to Museum visitors.
- Become familiar with the museum`s content related to tours and programs assigned.
- Deliver standard guided tours to museum visitors and tour groups.
- Deliver prescribed educational workshops, activities and tours to visiting school groups.
- Deliver standard program activities to museum visitors.
- Provide Interpretive Program Support
- Provide logistical support for programs and activities whether they are in the classrooms, gallery spaces or other programming venues. This may include moving furniture, setting up equipment, preparing props and program materials.
- Provide directions and assists with wayfinding.
- Ensure the security of visitors and exhibits.
- Occasionally act as a Gallery Host to cover scheduling shortages, missed shifts, breaks and lunches.
- Other Duties and Tasks as reasonably assigned
- One year of post-secondary education (university or college)
- Minimum of 3 months experience in working with the public or in delivering educational or public programs for a museum, school, historic site, cultural centre or related public educational facility or attraction.
- Ability to deliver tours and programs in both English and French (Bilingual positions only)
- Ability to deliver tours and programs in both English and French (Bilingual non-imperative positions only)
- Ability to deliver tours and programs in other languages, including sign language (ASL/LSQ).
- College or university degree
- First-hand experience with human rights situations.
- One or more years of experience in delivering educational or public programs or a museum, school, historic site, or related public educational facility or attraction.
- Experience working with children
- Experience with adult learners
- Knowledge of human rights subject matter
- Knowledge of Canadian history
- Experience in arts and culture and performance
- Interest in architecture
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in ambiguous or changing situations, and with diverse individuals and groups
- Strong customer service aptitude.
- Judgement, sensitivity, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public
- Demonstrated superior verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Cultural sensitivity and awareness
- Works well under pressure
- Comfortable interacting with media and technology such as mobile phones, tablet devices and touch screen computer monitors
- Reliable, responsible and punctual.
- Strong commitment to institutional values and policies
Official Language Proficiency:
Bilingual imperative positions only / C – advanced oral proficiency in French
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Work is in an open public environment.
- Comfortable moving along elevated ramps with exposure to open spaces of varying heights.
- Ability to lead groups on guided tours along ramps and through tight spaces.
- Ability to set up program materials
- Requires working irregular hours (evenings and weekends) on a regular basis
- Required to wear a Canadian Museum for Human Rights issued uniform.
