Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Chief Chemist and receiving work direction from Chemists, the Chemist Assistant 1 will:

  • Perform organic, inorganic or physical tests on samples including water, wastewater, sludge, biosolids, landfill samples and other effluents or substances.
  • Collect and/or receive samples from designated locations and performs field and bench testing as required
  • Uses Laboratory Management Information System (LIMS) to receive samples, organize work, monitor and chart Quality Control and report results
  • Carry out sample preparation including weighing, dissolving, digesting or extraction of samples for further analysis as required
  • Analyze samples following Standard Operating Procedures utilizing standard laboratory equipment and instrumentation including glassware, various sterilizers, meters, microscopes, balances, computers, various spectrophotometers and chromatographic instrumentation
  • Prepare chemical solutions and bacteriological media
  • Maintain neat and legible records, and assist in the preparation of reports
  • Demonstrate technical /functional instructions on laboratory procedures to students
  • Determine quantities and orders standard testing materials, receives material and checks for accuracy

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Experience in bacteriological and chemical testing of either water, wastewater, sludge, biosolids and/or landfill samples.
  2. Experience conducting mathematical calculations required for analytical chemistry.
  3. Experience in the use of laboratory instrumentation. Preference will be given to candidates with experience with Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometry and  High Performance Liquid Chromatography
  4. Experience with computers and software such as MS Office Suite, including familiarity with database and spreadsheet software.
  5. Post-secondary education in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Studies or related field or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  6. Experience conducting mathematical calculations required for analytical chemistry.

You must also have:

  • Ability to work in an organized and tidy manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with lab clients and other lab, staff and work as part of a team.
  • Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and the Regulations that apply to this work.
  • Must be available to travel to various work locations, as required.
  • Must be available to work on Saturdays and/or Sundays as part of a regular shift.
  • Experience with a LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of bacteriological and chemical testing principles of either water, wastewater, sludge, biosolids and/or landfill samples.
