We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Coordinator, Creativity Hub.
Reporting to Associate Vice President of Teaching and Learning, the Coordinator, Creativity Hub will oversee the operations of the first pilot year of a Creativity Hub located at 100 Market Street South in Brantford and guide it toward economic sustainability. The Creativity Hub is a proposed academic, industry and government joint venture to develop a creative cluster in Brantford, Ontario, Canada for the co-production and study of film, television, and games. This strategic partnership includes postsecondary education institutions, Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College, and Six Nations Polytechnic as well as industry partners.
The vision of this project is to build blended academic and industry spaces for networking, teaching, showcasing and the development of artistic and creative ventures in the entertainment industries of film, television, and games. The student learning experience will be woven into the creation of these projects offering experiential learning opportunities supported with applied creative and technical academic programming from local postsecondary institutions. The success of this project is predicated on the strong networks and relationships of the partners and stakeholders from key organizations, educational institutions, and all levels of government.
The spaces developed for the Hub will have three main foci 1) develop professional entertainment, journalism, or other media content productions 2) maximize experiential and theoretical learning of college and university students 3) offer networking spaces for creative collisions to occur between students, staff, faculty, researchers, and industry professionals which will lead to research partnerships.
The Creativity Hub, located at 100 Market Street South, will include dedicated spaces for the development and study of creative productions in the fields of film, television and games. Eventually, each production, learning and networking space will be designed to heighten and highlight the collaboration between industry and education.
The incumbent will provide excellent customer service to the community and will create a working environment which supports creativity and vitality.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Brantford campus. The incumbent provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring interaction, communication and collaboration with staff and stakeholders at the Waterloo Campus, Brantford Campus and external partners.
Hours of Work: The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to special events. When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
Investigate foreign investment subsidies: discuss with the Local, Regional, Provincial and Federal Governments on subsidies available for employment growth. Brantford is a prime area for growth in the creative and innovation sectors and the film industry is included as an area of growth in the city’s five year economic development plan. These subsidies would be shared within the joint venture.
Identify and secure grant monies.
Ensure that efficient systems are in place to enable the space to attain its objective of maximum sustainability.
Develop a business plan proposal for years 2 – 5 of the site.
Work with identified individuals to create a strategy around design, outreach, and operations.
Create a working environment which supports creativity and vitality.
Work with the animator of the space to generate a list of supporters and co-partners who wish to be involved in the space and participate in industry, university, and community events as needed.
Oversee and supervise as needed the work of students involved in the establishment of a film office for the City of Brantford.
Administrative support for those who use the Creativity Hub.
Space Logistics & Planning:
In collaboration with university, college, and industry partners, make sure that daily operation of the organization progresses smoothly.
Organize the schedules and timetables of the partners using the space
Coordinate internal and external bookings.
Ensure the readiness of the environment for the day-to-day operations of the internal client staff.
Coordinate logistical requirements of the space (budgeting, set-up, bookings, administrative support, catering quotes, assistance in hosting events, etc.).
Marketing and Social Media:
Prepare and execute a social media strategy in collaboration with the part-time animator.
Support the marketing strategy for the Creativity Hub.
Prepare and review engagement reports for social media to identify trends and establish best practices.
Responsible for the execution and upkeep of Creativity Hub digital marketing.
Interact with audiences regularly through social networks.
University degree commerce, accounting, marketing, economics or business administration; minimum 2 years of related experience
Familiarity with the entertainment industry economics or previous experience with incubator or accelerator spaces a key asset
Excellent knowledge of social media
Excellent communication (written and oral) and presentation skills
Analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of stakeholders both internal and external to the University (e.g. faculty, staff, students, volunteers, alumni, businesses, professional associations) with competing demands
Superior time management, organizational and interpersonal skills
Direct experience in dealing with budgets, accounting practices and controls
Extremely high levels of professionalism, collegiality, and self-motivation
Operate effectively in a cross functional team environment
Handle competing priorities and deadlines
Work both independently and as part of a team
Convey sense of urgency and drive issues to closure
Skills in grant writing would be an asset
