Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides support, counselling, crisis counselling, referrals and other public health services to drug users and sex workers
  • Provides harm reduction materials and harm reduction education to drug users and sex workers
  • Provides brief solution focussed counselling
  • Provides client coordination services through the assessment of client needs and development of service plans and implementation plans
  • Makes referrals to drug treatment/detox, housing, mental health, medical, food, counselling and support services
  • Assists and where necessary, accompanies clients to medical and/or psychosocial and housing appointments
  • Participates on internal and external committees as requested by Manager
  • Assists in the development of new programs and/or services
  • Identifies and establishes contacts with community groups, agencies, businesses and individual community leaders. Assists with the development of local leadership coalition building and action plans to work toward shared goals among the health unit, community based organizations and individuals
  • When requested, provides educational workshops, resources and consultation to the individuals, the community, health care professionals and health department staff
  • Maintains records and related statistics. Submits activity and other reports

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Experience in the provision of harm reduction, drug treatment/addiction counselling, methadone, social, health, housing and HIV/AIDS related services.
  2. Experience working with drug users and sex workers.
  3. Experience working in an outreach capacity.
  4. Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License Class “G” and be able to pass the test for and qualify to receive a City Equipment Operator’s License.

You must also have:

  • Knowledge of harm reduction, HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis transmission and prevention.
  • Knowledge of addictions and harms associated with drug use.
  • Knowledge of issues related to sex work.
  • Excellent assessment skills.
  • Ability to conduct work in a non-judgemental way, using a harm reduction approach.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include overtime, shift work, evenings and weekends.
