Position Summary : Historical origins of the Western tradition, examining shifting ideas about freedom, power, and legitimacy against the ebb and flow of empires, the horrors of plague and war, the beginnings of capitalism and modern science, the rise of extraordinary sophistication in music and visual art, and the emergence of the sovereign territorial state.
