Position Title: Dairy Herdsperson (NOC 8252)
Permanent, Full-Time, 3 Positions Available

Primary Purpose:
The primary purpose of this position is to optimize animal health and production through milking, nutrition, housing, feed management, health monitoring & maintenance and breeding. Ensuring cows are milked safely, cleanly, in keeping with Canadian Milk Quality standards. The work requires strict attention to detail to ensure milk quality, animal and personal safety.

Required Duties:

Milking
Perform all pre-milking checks to system and equipment prior to cows entering the milking parlour; Ensure cows entered are appropriate for milking; Prepare the cow for milking by cleaning and preparing teat , set milking unit to “milk”, align milking unit with udder and attach; Perform pre- dip, cleaning and prep and post-dip procedures; Observe animal behavior to Identify cows needing follow up; Perform all post milking checks to system and equipment and thoroughly clean milking units and parlour

Animal Health & Breeding
Assist with herd health checks, procedures and record keeping; Assist with heat identification and help with animal breeding, noting animal condition, semen selection and record keeping; Monitor animal behavior to identify potential health problems

Animal Housing
Inspect animal bedding, clean and replace as per established schedule; Maintain calf housing, bedding, etc.

Nutrition Management
Monitor quality and consistency of animal feeds, noting reduction in consumption, animal discomfort/behavior; Prepare and feed calves as per established procedures to ensure optimal health and conditioning

Equipment Operation
Operate & maintain a variety of farm equipment in a safe manner. Equipment includes but is not limited to tractors, skidsteers, loaders, trucks,

Requirements of the Position
Graduation from high school or equivalent. Courses, certificates, diplomas in agriculture &/or dairy animal science considered an asset.
Some on farm experience is a requirement. Animal husbandry experience considered an asset.
Class 5 drivers license is required
Must be fluent in English – speaking, reading & writing
