Reporting to the VP Development and Alumni Relations, the Director, Development: Strategic Initiatives oversees, develops and implements fundraising and business development strategies to secure gifts in support of the priorities and values established through consultation with relevant stakeholders at the University. As a key member of the Development & Alumni Relations leadership team at Laurier, the Director, participates in department-wide planning and initiatives which enhance Laurier’s fundraising priorities. They will lead and manage the Strategic Initiatives Development Team – comprised of development staff that includes a combination of Associate Directors, Development Officers, and Development Assistants.

In addition to personally managing and advancing an assigned list of 100+ major gift donors and prospects; the Director will oversee the development and implementation by the Strategic Initiatives Development team of customized campaign strategies and individualized strategic approaches to secure gifts and pledges from individuals (alumni and friends) corporations, and foundations.; develop and manages timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fund raising processes are carried out in a timely manner; manage the team’s work with university senior administrators, faculty and volunteers; and monitor and evaluate fundraising activities to ensure that the fundraising goals are being achieved

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Brantford Campus and will include significant time spent at the Waterloo campus. The incumbent provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction, communication and collaboration with staff, stakeholders and community partners. The Director will ensure the unit’s policies, programs and services are delivered equitably across all campuses and reflect the needs of local stakeholders.

Accountabilities : Leadership of Strategic Initiatives Fundraising Team
  • Works closely with VP Development and Alumni Relations to establish annual and multi-year fundraising goals for the team and specific goals for team members
  • Provides leadership to the Strategic Initiatives Development team and oversees direct reports: a combination of Associate Directors, Development Officers, and Development Assistants
  • Works with the team to set goals and priorities and monitors team’s progress
  • Meets regularly with the team to review progress and plans, develop strategy and ensure goals are achieved
  • Coaches and mentors development team members to strengthen strategies and provide feedback to ensure success
  • Participates in annual performance management process.

Major Gift Fundraising and Prospect Management

  • Manages an assigned list of 100+ major gift donors and prospects representing individuals, foundations, corporations and associations for the purpose of securing financial support;
  • Develops and implements strategies for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects to achieve financial targets;
  • Coordinates prospect/donor calls, makes visits and ensures all necessary follow-up including correspondence to donors, contact reports, updates to Banner, and drafting of terms and conditions;
  • Develops, submits and follows up on funding proposals to prospective donors;
  • Develops and implements, in concert with Donor Relations and Stewardship team, stewardship strategies for individual donors, including gift announcements, donor cultivation/recognition events, and reports to donors on progress and outcomes of fundraising projects they have supported with a view to strengthening those relationships.

Client Specific Fundraising, Planning, Strategy Development & Reporting

  • Collaborates with key resources (faculty, staff, and leaders) within client group to develop a fundraising plan that aligns with the strategic priorities of the university
  • Maintains a good working knowledge of the activities, priorities and needs in teaching, research and other areas of the Strategic Priorities portfolio
  • Recommends specific actions to increase the effectiveness of development activities including own performance
  • Works closely with the relevant senior leaders and individual faculty members and staff in fundraising and donor relations activities on behalf of the unit;
  • Works collaboratively with Alumni Relations and Annual Giving teams and the Advancement Services team to ensure alignment and collaboration across the department

External Communications

  • Collaborates with the Communications team and other Development and Alumni Relations staff to prepare and coordinate all communication pertaining to fundraising and donor relations within the units;
  • Prepares and edits relevant communications materials, such as project descriptions, case statements, funding proposals, and gift agreements.

Volunteer Management, Faculty Liaison and Administration

  • Identifies, recruits and manages volunteers to assist in fundraising activities as appropriate
  • In consultation with other colleagues, ensures the effective and efficient use of centralized resources and information;
  • Contributes to the preparation and management of the annual budget for Development and Alumni Relations;
Qualifications :
  • University degree; CFRE preferred
  • A strong commitment to post-secondary education and continuous learning;
  • Proven performance in prospect development, management and stewardship
  • Experience in working collaboratively with corporate and public partners
  • 7 to 10 years’ experience in a post-secondary major gift and corporate fundraising and business development.
  • Capital Campaign experience preferred
  • Strong managerial/operational skills;
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills including experience in goal setting, motivating, leading, supervising, evaluating and developing a capable team of professionals;
  • Experience collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, including senior volunteer leadership;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, volunteers and colleagues;
  • Strong planning and project management skills;
  • Sound analytical and decision-making skills;
  • Excellent relationship building skills, good judgement and diplomacy;
  • Collaboration and teamwork; strong work ethic; ego in check.
  • Strong oral, written, and presentation skills.
Grade : MG-3A
Salary : $92,438 to $115,547
