With the support of its funding partners, Indspire disburses financial awards, delivers programs, and shares resources with the goal of closing the gap in Indigenous education. Through Indspire’s K-12 Institute, it provides resources to educators, communities, and other stakeholders who are committed to improving kindergarten to grade 12 successes for Indigenous youth. In 2016-17, Indspire awarded $11.6 million through over 3,700 bursaries and scholarships to Indigenous youth, making it the largest funder of Indigenous post-secondary education outside the federal government. Each year, the organization presents the Indspire Awards, a celebration of the successes achieved by Indigenous people that is broadcast nationally.

Never has there been a better time to join this national leader.  In this newly created position, the Director, Human Resources and Administration will report to the Chief Operating Officer, and provide senior level strategic and operational human resources (HR) and administrative operations support for Indspire. This includes both the development and implementation of strategic HR processes, systems and policies as well as ensuring related legislative and reporting requirements are met. The incumbent will understand and anticipate the HR and operational needs and priorities of the organization, and promote a healthy, inclusive and safe work environment

The position responsibilities of the Director, Human Resources and Administration include but are not limited to:

Key Duties

  • Provides oversight and guidance organizationally on the development and application of all HR and Administration standards and guidelines;
  • Provides HR strategic advice and management services to support the day-to-day operational activities;
  • Ensures advice and programming are embedded in Indigenous principles and approaches;
  • Ensures that HR and administration practices are aligned with Indspire’s strategic priorities and adhere to applicable legislation and best practices;
  • Ensures Indspire is in compliance with AODA, human rights and health and safety legislation;
  • Develops, maintains and evaluates HR promising practices, strategic directions, policies and processes for COO approval;
  • Responsible for all aspects of recruitment, including compensation, benefits programs and workplace planning needs and strategies, in collaboration with the Management team and Finance department;
  • Manages compensation program;
  • Creates and revises job descriptions;
  • Coordinates and administers the Job Evaluation program;
  • Leads the organization’s orientation program with management participation;
  • Responsible for all workplace committees related to HR, including but not limited to the Health & Safety Committee;
  • Provides advice to Management on employee relations, coaching, performance management up to and including progressive discipline and termination processes for COO approval;
  • Advises and updates the COO on personnel issues and prepares necessary correspondence, briefings and reports;
  • Conducts workplace investigations in consultation with the COO;
  • Manages the administration and maintenance of HR databases and record keeping systems, including security of personnel records;
  • Develops and delivers information/training sessions related to HR policies, processes and procedures as necessary, including legal changes and updates as they relate to HR conduct in the workplace;
  • Develops and manages Indspire’s Volunteer program at an organizational level;
  • Maintains Employee Handbook;
  • Prepares metrics reports including items related to organizational demographics, attendance, administration, retention and engagement levels for Management’s use;
  • Coordinates change and transition management processes related to HR;
  • Ensures efficient and accurate administrative systems and procedures, identifying gaps as appropriate;
  • Maintains confidentiality related to all activities and information of a strategic or sensitive nature.

Administration/Operational Management

  • Responsible for the management of office operations as they relate to day-to-day functioning;
  • Trouble shoots and recommends solutions to IT issues in coordination with the Manager, Finance & Administration and the EA to the COO;
  • Facilitates all scheduled replacement of equipment or provisioning for new staff in the Toronto office and coordinates with the Manager, Finance at the Six Nations office;
  • Arranges timely set up for new staff including equipment, IT etc.; arranges removal of access and retrieves equipment for exiting staff in coordination with the responsible manager;
  • Monitors issues and makes recommendations to COO for system improvements and ensures sound controls are in place;
  • Accountable for Indspire’s office space planning for COO approval and for all landlord issues at the Toronto office working with the EA to the COO.

Qualifications

  • Completion of post-secondary education in HR or equivalent experience, including a CHRP designation
  • Progressive experience, usually demonstrated through a minimum of 5-7 years in an HR managerial function
  • Proven experience in thinking strategically and acting pragmatically to deliver on sound HR policy and practice
  • Experience in compensation practices
  • Knowledge of and experience in Indigenous communities strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated openness to learning and willingness to engage in cultural competency training
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills including demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff
  • Knowledge of HR and Administration practices and systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in applying labour and employment legislation
  • Excellent communication skills and well-developed conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion, judgement and a high level of professionalism
  • Proven experience and skill in influencing others without clear authority or direct line responsibility
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills
  • Superior skills in conflict resolution and culturally knowledgeable ways of doing so
  • Ability to work and make decisions independently and without direct supervision
  • Ability to prioritize and deal with multiple projects and changing deadlines
  • Proven skills with a variety of software packages; Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Power Point) and HRIS systems
  • Demonstrated experience in trouble shooting and finding solutions to information technology issues
  • Ability to work with sensitive information with complete confidentiality
  • Travel between Six Nations and Toronto offices is required
  • Must be able to work occasional evening and weekends.
