Director, Individual Giving

Indspire is an Indigenous-led registered charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada. With the support of its funding partners, Indspire disburses financial awards, delivers programs, and shares resources with the goal of closing the gap in Indigenous education. Through the Indspire Institute, it provides resources to educators, communities, and other stakeholders who are committed to improving kindergarten to grade 12 success for Indigenous youth. Since its inception in 1985, Indspire has disbursed almost $79 million through close to 25,000 scholarships and bursaries to Indigenous students, making it the largest funder of Indigenous education outside the federal government. Each year, the organization presents the Indspire Awards, a gala celebration of the successes achieved by Indigenous people that is broadcast nationally.

The Director, Individual Giving will play a leadership role in the  management and expansion of individual giving programs, as well as secure private sector revenue sources to support Indspire by researching, identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors and prospects The director will also ensure the planning and execution of stewardship and fundraising activities as appropriate to support annual giving, monthly giving, major gift and planned giving programs and provide assistance to corporate fundraising programs as appropriate.

The position responsibilities of the Director, Individual Giving include:

Key Duties

  • Reports to and works closely with the Vice President, Development to develop and execute all annual giving revenue programs and initiatives aimed at engaging and involving individual donors with Indspire with the goal of moving them toward major and planned gifts.
  • Leads prospect research to identify and qualify potential major gift ($25k+) and leadership giving donors ($1,000 to $9,999) as well as cultivation and solicitation of prospects in keeping with Indspire’s priorities and fundraising strategies.
  • Provides management and strategic direction to Individual Giving staff to ensure successful execution of fundraising and stewardship strategies, programs to maximize revenues.
  • Develops goals and conducts mid-year and annual performance reviews for direct reports.
  • Ensures the execution of comprehensive annual giving programs (personal solicitation, direct response, monthly giving, tele fund, special events, family campaigns, etc.).
  • Leads the planning and execution of Major Gifts and Planned Giving programs.
  • Maintains a portfolio of approximately 100 leadership and major gift prospects to cultivate, solicit and steward.
  • Ensures that systems are in place to provide recognition, reporting, and effective communication for major gift donors and prospects.
  • Creates, develops and coordinates a variety of programs to engage volunteers and donors in Indspire programs to ensure their support.
  • Working closely with Communications and Marketing, creates donor communications materials including customized funding proposals/packages, gift agreements, case for support documents, briefing notes for solicitation, newsletters, stewardship reports, presentations, online content and other fundraising materials as required.
  • Produces reports, analyzes results, recommends changes as required to maximize annual giving revenues.
  • Works with the Vice President, Development to research and help plan the Department’s annual budget; monitors the Individual Giving budget ensuring goals are met.
  • Researches, develops and implements web-based revenue generation, communication and donor engagement activities to ensure Indspire is at the cutting edge of interactive development strategies and techniques.
  • Provides support at fundraising events and for fundraising projects as required.
  • Attends functions as appropriate to promote Indspire to donors and prospects.

Qualifications

  • Post secondary degree or equivalent
  • A minimum of seven years’ experience of demonstrated success in fundraising in the not-for-profit sector with a focus on individual giving (direct response/marketing, leadership giving, major gifts and planned giving).
  • Ability to direct and manage staff.
  • A solid understanding of the fund development and moves management process.
  • Working towards or having attained CFRE an asset.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all donors, volunteers and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate multiple projects, deadlines and priorities.
  • Team player that displays initiative.
  • Highly computer literate and the ability to work effectively with fundraising software to drive results.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information with complete confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of the Indigenous community is an asset.
  • Occasional travel between Six Nations and Toronto offices is required.
  • Ability to work in French, Canada’s other official language, is an asset.
  • Must be able to work occasional evening and weekends and be willing to travel within Canada.
