The Organization

In 2005, after a joint meeting between the Assembly of First Nations and the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, it was agreed that increasing capacity of First Nations Health Managers was critical to improving First Nations health service delivery at the community level. A needs assessment was undertaken, and the resulting competency framework established led to the creation of The First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA) in 2010. With nearly a decade of success behind them, the FNHMA has solidified its presence as a national, professional association exclusively serving the needs of individuals working for or aspiring for positions with First Nations organizations.

FNHMA’s Mission

To provide leadership in health management activities by developing and promoting quality standards, practices, research, certification and professional development to expand capacity for members and First Nations.

Integral to the association achieving its mission, the FNHMA offers a certification program that leads to the Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM) professional designation. First Nations Health Managers are leaders who honour, maintain and uphold inherent ways of knowing while balancing management principles to bring excellence to their communities and health programs. This certification program is complemented by workshops, also offered by the FNHMA. The full description of the workshops can be found on their website.

FNHMA is a member-based association. Members are provided with resources and tools as well as networking and professional development opportunities. In addition, the association assists its members and their organizations to set strategic goals, successfully implement business plans, and deliver quality health service programs. The FNHMA also hosts an annual conference every fall, focusing on current issues and best practices in health management.

The Position

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Capacity and Member Services has overall responsibility for the design and delivery of the programs and services offered to FNHMA members. The Director will ensure that the FNHMA upholds and expands the competencies of First Nations Health Managers by providing sound advice on education and health trends and modernizing the certification and workshop curriculums and delivery models. The Director will also offer and solicit input on technology and instructional best practices to directly improve programming and delivery. In addition, the Director will oversee the curation and continuous updating of the FNHMA online resource library and ensure that regular feedback is gathered from members on courses, workshops and resources to help identify improvements.

The Director will serve as a key member of the executive team and act as a spokesperson for the association, playing a lead role in member engagement, the annual conference, and other networking events and activities. The Director will also be involved in strategic planning for the association. Leading and developing a small team, the Director will ensure the effective implementation of workplans and professional development plans. The Director will also develop and manage the annual budget for capacity building and member services.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree and ten (10) years’ relevant career experience in professional development, adult education and workshop facilitation;
  • Five (5) years’ experience in senior management positions with similar organizations;
  • Experience in curriculum design, development and renewal;
  • Previous experience in health care (First Nation or otherwise) is considered a strong asset;
  • Experience working in a public sector funding environment including, producing proposals for government funding programs, management of funds received, reporting for funding agreements and public sector accounting practices;
  • High levels of professional effectiveness, collaboration, integrity, optimism, and high energy;
  • Outstanding organization and attention to detail;
  • Strong and effective leadership skills combined with strong verbal and written communication, presentation abilities and good interpersonal skills;
  • Currently possessing, or committed to earning, the Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM), or Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) designation.
