Director of Health
Located along the scenic St. Lawrence River, The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) is a Community Government, governed by four (4) elected Chiefs from each of the three districts within Akwesasne: Kawehno:ke (Cornwall Island, Ontario), Kana:takon (St. Regis, Quebec) and Tsi Snaihne (Snye, Quebec). There are a total of twelve District Chiefs and one Grand Chief. Together, the Chiefs constitute the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.
The Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne is jurisdictionally unique in that the Akwesasne Territory includes portions that are in both Ontario and Quebec as well as New York State in the United States of America. Akwesasne is the only First Nation community in Canada that has these unique jurisdiction and geographic features. With flourishing economic development, spirited cultural identity and a commitment to highly engaged sustained and future relationships, Akwesasne continues to evolve as a strong, vibrant and healthy community.
Reporting to the Executive Director and working with the Health Advisory Board and the Portfolio Chiefs, the Director of Health is responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and administering all activities involving the operations of health programs and facilities with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne including: two clinics, a long-term care facility, elders lodge, traditional medicine program, non-insured health benefits, home care, ambulance services, etc.
The Director of Health will bring knowledge and experience in First Nations health service delivery, accreditation, administration, change management and operations. As the successful candidate, you will lead and be ultimately responsible for the strategic direction of the department as well as the long-term community health plan. You will build and strengthen on existing effective relationships with government stakeholders, health delivery partners, and the community at large. Fostering a service-focused culture, the Director of Health will influence innovative and culturally relevant health programs and will direct department advancements in service delivery, policy, information management and human resource strategies.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree (Masters of Public Health or Masters of Health Administration preferred) along with a minimum of 7 years of significant experience in health service operations and administration. Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates. Proficiency in Mohawk or French is an asset.
