Since its official opening in 2005, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) has developed and delivered a distinctive, world-recognized model of distributed, community-engaged and socially accountable medical education and research. NOSM serves as the Faculty of Medicine of both Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and Laurentian University in Sudbury, with teaching and research sites across Northern Ontario – making the entire region its campus.
This is an exceptional career opportunity for a senior manager with Indigenous lived experience and a proven track record of working with Indigenous peoples, cultures and communities, in particular a history of engagement with various Indigenous communities that are integral to the School’s success, to play a key role in fulfilling a vision of Innovative Education and Research for a Healthier North.
Reporting directly to the Vice Dean Academic, the Director of the Indigenous Affairs Unit acts as primary liaison between NOSM, Indigenous groups, communities and stakeholders, provides leadership in Indigenous issues, and facilitates resources and support for Indigenous learners as well as faculty and staff. The Director ensures that the Indigenous component of the interprofessional education strategy is well developed and effectively implemented, to better support staff, faculty and learner recruitment strategies that are reflective of the School’s commitment to Indigenous people and communities.
The new Director will act as a member of the Management Group of NOSM, contribute to academic and administrative developments of the School, and monitor programs and activities to ensure they are sensitive and responsive to the needs of Indigenous communities. With previous experience in collaboratively managing the financial, human and physical resources of a unit, the Director will also supervise Unit staff, manage day-to-day activities, effectively control and allocate the budget and program funding, as well as provide longer term direction for the Indigenous Affairs Unit.
The successful candidate for this pivotal role will have a master’s degree in health, education or another relevant discipline from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation, or its equivalent, no fewer than five (5) years’ senior management experience, preferably in a health or education portfolio and ideally, a managerial or supervisory background in a unionized setting.
This unique mandate calls for a networking-savvy leader who is familiar with universities and/or the broader health community, understands current and emerging Indigenous and mainstream higher education and health-care issues, as well as Indigenous culture(s), ceremonies and cultural protocols, and can further overall School strategic objectives through consultation and collaboration. This relationship builder will have established links to various stakeholders (e.g., Indigenous communities, groups, other universities, medical schools, relevant governmental levels and services), and be prepared to welcome input and direction, act as an effective change agent, and resolve problems to achieve results in a dynamic, complex and time-pressured environment, often with competing demands and priorities. Extensive travel throughout Northern Ontario will be expected.
While the Director must be an effective communicator in English (verbal, written and comprehension), the ability to communicate in one of the Indigenous languages of Northern Ontario (Ojibway, Oji-Cree or Cree) or a willingness to learn to communicate in one or all of these languages is a considerable asset, as is the ability to communicate in Michif and/or French.
