DISTRICT VICE-PRINCIPAL, ABORIGINAL EDUCATION VACANCY

School District 71 (Comox Valley) is a progressive school district whose mission is to work with all educational partners to develop responsible, compassionate citizens and successful lifelong learners. We provide a comprehensive educational program to 8200 students (1100 students with Aboriginal Ancestry) from kindergarten to grade 12. Our district has a strong history of student scholarships, innovation, and locally developed programs. The School District has 1300 employees, 14 elementary schools, 1 middle school, 1 K-9 school, 3 secondary schools, 2 alternate schools, the North Island Distance Education School and an $80 million operating budget.

We are looking for an educational leader to fill the position of
District Vice-Principal, Aboriginal Education.
HIRING CRITERIA FOR VICE-PRINCIPALSHIP (per Policy 4006)

Educational Leadership

The Board requires its vice-principals to have a Master’s Degree (or significant progress toward it) and a valid membership with the Teacher Regulation Branch of the Ministry of Education. Further, a vice-principal must have demonstrated during her/his career in Education:

  • a commitment to the Principles of Learning and to the Principles of Inclusive Schools
  • a commitment to a consultative, collaborative, teamwork approach involving students, parents, school staff and the community
  • a commitment to supporting the interests of the Board and the District
  • a recent record of teaching excellence and leadership
  • an understanding of the important role a full range of educational programs play in the growth and development of students
  • a strong advocacy for student diversity and for students with special needs
  • a commitment to the concept of a “safe and caring school”
  • the ability to motivate staff and be an advocate for staff development based on school needs
  • a commitment to ongoing personal and professional development
  • strong support for a healthy and effective Parent Advisory Council and School Planning Council
  • the ability to implement a strong community communications program
  • the ability to establish and maintain a positive, cooperative, caring environment in schools
  • the ability to implement and maintain an environment that supports positive student behaviour
  • patterns of successful experience in different educational settings

Administrative History

A vice-principal must have demonstrated during her/his career in Education:

  • effective problem-solving, conflict management and mediation skills in relations with all members of the school community
  • friendliness, good humour, flexibility, enthusiasm, accessibility, forthrightness, openness and honesty
  • respect for children and others and generate respect in return
  • good judgment in assessing the strengths and needs of a school’s organization and operation
  • successful implementation of new programs

Skills

A district vice-principal of Aboriginal Education must have demonstrated during her/his career in Education:

  • excellence in supporting grade 8-12 secondary school staff in highlighting Aboriginal world views in the secondary curriculum
  • strong organizational and management skills, including budget development and management
  • skills in dealing with human resources and labour management issues
  • excellent interpersonal, communication and listening skills
  • skills in dealing with crisis situations
  • skills in establishing and maintaining a close working relationship with all members of the school community and Aboriginal groups
  • skills in establishing and maintaining close relationships with First Nation’s government
  • essential skills in technological literacy
  • an understanding of the major components of the educational programs offered in Aboriginal Education
  • experience and understanding in the negotiation and implementation of an Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement
  • an understanding of educational processes and best practice to improve Aboriginal student success
  • skills in working with an Aboriginal Education Council to establish clear goals and direction
  • ability to establish and maintain links with the Aboriginal community and community at large
  • advocacy and leadership in Aboriginal program development and implementation
  • awareness of Aboriginal cultural protocols
  • Aboriginal ancestry preferred
