The Education Administrator will be responsible for organizing and managing the administration and support systems in order to ensure the smooth operation of the educational programs.  The incumbent oversees areas under the education umbrella including, but not limited to:  admissions, data management, staff management, communications, reporting, and public relations.  The Education Administrator is the primary contact for the education services of Saugeen First Nation and the needs of the students, adjusting and correcting as needed.  The incumbent participates in various human resources activities within education including selecting and hiring educational assistants.  The Education Administrator ensures that all those operating under his/her direction are primarily focused on the mission and goals of Saugeen First Nation.  The incumbent provides exceptional leadership and guidance in order to ensure the quality of the education department.


  • Implement the education goals as established annually by Chief and Council
  • Report to the Band Administrator and liaise with the Education Committee
  • Implement, adhere, negotiate and report to all Funding Agreements
  • Provide an administrative/monitoring function over Education programs and service delivery, as well as the day-to-day operations of the Education Department
  • Safeguard student records
  • Maintain liaison with relevant outside education organizations and funding bodies
  • Develop third party protocols as directed
  • Be an advocate in advancing the needs of SFN members to ensure access to training, skills development and higher education
  • Keep current on education developments by accessing and reading relevant literature, attending seminars, workshops, conferences and availing oneself of other resources
  • Attending various education meetings (committees, local education boards, student/teacher/ parent, government, Ministry, etc.) or designate other education department personnel to participate in these meetings
  • Develop a working knowledge of Saugeen’s community as to the education system including strategies, resources, needs, challenges, issues and concerns
  • Work respectfully with school psychologists and other specialized assessment collaterals and paraprofessional bodies as a team member for student special education assessment processes
  • Develop and monitor the annual work plans and budgets by overseeing the maintenance of accountability mechanisms, monitoring and evaluation processes for programs
  • Train, orient aid and develop staff through annual professional development plans
  • Administer and implement policies and programs adopted by Saugeen First Nation
  • Provide clearly written staff job descriptions
  • Review staff positions periodically and recommending salary rate adjustments
  • Participating in the hiring process and the oversee the orientation of new personnel
  • Ensure the proper and timely completion of required personnel related documentation and reports
  • Manage staff within the department
  • Be pro-active in creating a climate of sharing the experience of elders within the community and directing a cooperative place for elder’s transference of knowledge and wisdom
  • Understand and interpret Federal and Provincial contribution agreements
  • Secure funding and prepare regular reports on First Nation funding
  • Ensure accountability of financial reporting to funding bodies
  • Preparing a clear, concise annual report of the program activities and finances to Chief and Council
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility of the education department within the policies and procedures
  • Interpret First Nation Education reform and legislation and their potential impact on the education services for our members
  • Maintain the confidentiality of the education department and its clients
  • Be concerned with legal liability and compliance


  • Degree in Education, Education Administration or related field of study is required.
  • Additional Qualifications for Special Education would be considered an asset
  • A minimum of five (5) year’s management/supervisory work experience in a related field
  • Thorough knowledge of First Nation education and social issues
  • Experience working in the delivery of education services for First Nation communities
  • Strong financial background with monitoring experience of large scale budgets
  • Ability and knowledge to seek funding from various sources as well as write proposals for funding
  • Sound knowledge of policy development, implementation and evaluation
  • Ability to assess statistics and determine an action plan to improve success rates
  • Commitment to helping children learn
  • Strong Microsoft Office user including Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated problem solving and judgement capability
  • Experience in team building, strategy development and organizational development
  • Ability to organize workload and set priorities, and to be flexible with changing priorities and deadlines
  • High level of attention to confidentiality
  • Ability to travel as required, mandatory class G driver’s license, access to reliable transportation
  • Mandatory CPIC and Vulnerable Sector check will be a condition of employment
