The Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) in Fort McMurray, is seeking an experienced and highly motivated professional to join our talented Health Team for the position of the Health Director. The primary focus of the Director of Health is to improve the lives of ATC First Nations by promoting the health of the community through: advocating for increased health programming, developing partnerships, establishing policies; ensuring culturally relevant health education, and improving the delivery of healthcare services.

The Director of Health is responsible for the day to day management, operational effectiveness, and financial performance of the Health Department.  The Director provides leadership in proposing and administering a comprehensive health program which effectively identifies and addresses the community needs.  The Director also develops collaborative working relations with multiple public and private agencies to initiate and participate with community projects focusing on public health services. Strong leadership and management skills to build effective and cohesive teams are essential.


Reporting to the CEO, the Health Director will be responsible for the management and for carrying out the mandate and vision of the Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) with regard to the delivery and administration of health programs and services to ATC First Nation members. This will include the administration of the ATC Health Department including planning, development, implementation, and operations.

  • Prepare and deliver all financial and program reporting requirements to all stakeholders
  • Develop an annual plan of healthcare projects and manage the projects within budget
  • The identification, negotiation, and implementation of new health enhancing programs and services as they become available
  • Develop and maintain relationships with all interested parties
  • Build effective team relationships that support employee performance and development
  • Provide advocacy within the community and or with other agencies
  • Assess and advise First Nations on appropriate strategies linked with current organizational goals, and regional and political environments
  • Provide tools, directions and resources for the management staff
  • Consult with and serve as an interface with the community health departments for the purpose of ensuring that ATC Health Department policies, programs and services are meeting the needs of the Nations
  • Ensures that the organization delivers the full range of health programs/services within budget
  • Ability to travel


  • To qualify, you must have a minimum of 5-10 years of related work experience, combined with a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. You will also be registered and in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA), Masters level degree in an appropriate field preferred.
  • Previous management experience working within a First Nation Health Administration setting
  • Current Criminal Record Check
  • Current CYIM Check
  • Valid Alberta’s Driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract
  • Have an in depth understanding of First Nation health issues and programs
  • Proven leadership and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding and appreciation for First Nation Culture
  • Understanding of and experience with First Nation administrations
  • Excellent computer skills
