We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as an Indigenous Events Support Coordinator.

Reporting to the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Initiatives, with day to day direction from the Indigenous Student Support Co-ordinator, the Events Co-ordinator is responsible for facilitating the organization of various flagship events and projects of the Indigenous Student Centre.

The Events Co-ordinator must be able to create and maintain relationships with other faculty and staff in their respective departments. The Events Co-ordinator provides front line service to all students, staff, faculty and guests to the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) and plays a key role in directing each individual to the appropriate resources or staff person.

This position will work closely with the Indigenous Student Support Co-ordinator (ISSC) to direct the Indigenous l Student Centre Leadership Team to deliver events and build a strong Indigenous campus community, as well as create connections with various on and off campus departments, agencies, and local Indigenous Groups.

Accountabilities : Foster Student Mentorship and Teamwork


  • Provides the Indigenous Student Leadership team with mentorship and opportunities to develop their skills, meeting together as a team as least once per month
  • Schedules the ISCLT shifts and processes payment paperwork, maintains attendance and works with the ISSC to direct their duties
  • Represents the ISC in various on-campus committees such as the Diversity Council, the Purposeful Collaboration Group, and other committees as needed
  • Works with the Indigenous Student Leadership team with outreach events, involving campus and community opportunities
  • Provides support to the Indigenous Student Association as needed



  • Writes and updates descriptions about OII events to be published on the OAI website and other marketing and communication material
  • Ensures the ISC’s visual presence at events supported by the Office of Indigenous Initiatives or various on campus outreach events and organizes student participation in these events
  • Works with the ISSC and the Indigenous Student Recruitment and Retention Officer to promote events on the website, and via social media


  • Order and monitor supplies and subscriptions for the Indigenous Student  Centre and staff
  • Arrange mail outs of information and courier packages
  • Maintains bookings of Mino Kummink Garden and the Indigenous Student Centre
  • Assists with the booking of appointments for the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator and/or the Senior Advisor of Indigenous Initiatives, as required
  • Ensure the resource room, kitchen, and centre space is tidy and maintained
  • Assists in the sign out and returns of books in the Indigenous Student Centre Resource Library, directing the ISCLT students as needed
  • Greets and assists students, staff, faculty and guests coming to the Indigenous Student  Centre and determine how best to meet their needs;
  • Answers the phone and e-mail inquiries, and provides appropriate information or redirection of questions;
  • Remain up-to-date on information regarding Indigenous Student Centre and University programs and services to be able to share with multiple stakeholders
  • Provide general support to the Senior Advisor, Indigenous Initiatives and the Indigenous Student Support Coordinator, as required.

Qualifications :

  • College diploma plus two years related experience, including work with Indigenous Student Leaders,
  • Experience organizing and facilitating group events
  • Experience coordinating events featuring dignitaries and high level officials with diplomacy, tact, and timeliness.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures and traditions through North America is required, in particular showcasing Indigenous hospitality and protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate an indigenous worldview within a post-secondary education context
  • Demonstrated ability to work well as a team, and be a positively contributing team member. Demonstrated ability to work independently, and make decisions under pressure
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills (creative, diplomatic, inter-culturally sensitive, patient, tactful, etc.) and communication skills (both oral and written)
  • Excellent computer skills including MS Word, MS Excel, and the technical aptitude to learn programs unique to the university
  • Familiarity with university atmosphere / services
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to a changing environment with initiative and flexibility
  • An understanding of barriers and challenges in the post-secondary environment facing Indigenous students is necessary
  • Ability to speak a local Indigenous language is a desired asset

Grade : WLUSA-06
Salary : $28.49 – $33.51
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, limited term position until October 25, 2018. The anticipated start date for this position is April 2, 2018.
