Position: Indigenous Food Coordinator – Ojiibikens Early Years Program

Ojibiikaan Indigenous Cultural Network (Ojibiikaan) is a First Nations-led not-for-profit in Toronto. Ojibiikaan formed in 2018 in response to an identified gap in dedicated Indigenous Food Sovereignty programming to address food systems, food education, food justice, and agricultural and ecological practices and protocols in Toronto. Our mandate is to strengthen Indigenous roots in Toronto, the GTA and surrounding First Nations communities through knowledge exchange and land-based food projects.
Ojiibikens (“Little Roots”) is Ojibiikaan’s Early Years program. Under this program, staff will deliver mobile cultural and land-based activities for Indigenous children and their families in Toronto. This program is funded through the City of Toronto by the Government of Ontario Journey Together strategy for reconciliation.
Reporting to the Program Manager and working collaboratively with the Ojibiikaan team, the Indigenous Food Coordinator works to coordinate and deliver traditional food and nutrition programming for Indigenous children and their families across Toronto within Ojiibikens’ mandate.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate food and nutrition programming, in support of Ojiibikens’ mandate through management of timelines, budgets and deliverables;
- Design and facilitate engaging, hands-on, and culturally relevant community kitchens, food systems projects and workshops;
- Lead medicine and nature walks;
- Coordinate use and distribution of harvest from Ojibiikaan gardens with community partners;
- Support and work with partner agencies to deliver collaborative programming;
- Maintain activity spaces and ensure the environment is clean and safe for infants, toddlers and children;
- Lead Ojiibikens team in event and conference planning as required;
- Work with and assist Garden Coordinator with volunteer management (recruit, train, supervise);
- Document weekly activities, prepare reports and collaborate on the implementation of donor reporting by tracking relevant information;
- Assist with the coordination, implementation, and tracking of project evaluation tools such as outcome measurement, frameworks, surveys and participant evaluation forms;
- Support community outreach and consultation sessions as required, attend committee meetings as required; and,
- Provide support to funding applications as required.
Education and Experience
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in nutrition, ethnobotany, Indigenous studies or other related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1-2 years of experience in community food projects.
- 1-2 years of experience with an Indigenous community organization.
- Experience in outreach, facilitating workshops and delivering presentations.
- Experience or involvement with Indigenous Food Sovereignty or other local/sustainable food movements an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Indigenous food systems and traditional foods/food preparation.
- Knowledge of native plant identification and uses, harvesting and foraging.
- Knowledge of a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit language is a definite asset.
- Commitment to fostering positive community atmosphere.
- Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills.
- Ability to self-motivate, work independently and delegate tasks.
- Effective communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to perform moderate physical labor, lift up to 40lbs and work on feet and outdoors.
- Ability to travel as required, valid G-Class Driver’s License in good standing is an asset.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to use computers for word processing, publication, data collection, e‐mail and internet.
The incumbent works in a comfortable office environment and is also required to be mobile and travel within the city to deliver programming. Working off‐site at community events is required, as is occasional travel outside the city. This is a full-time contract position based in Toronto from October 2018 to December 31, 2019 with the possibility of extension. The salary ranges from $50,960 to $58,540 dependent on experience.
