The Software Engineer will manage the ministry corporate software architectural development environment and infrastructure cross multiple environments and ministry/sector, mission critical applications and to provide technical expertise and standards to systems professionals developing, implementing, integrating, and maintaining ministry custom applications.  The Software Engineer for major projects manages the development, enhancement and maintenance of Ministry systems including Industrial Control System (ICS) technology.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure plans transportation networks, provides transportation services and infrastructure, develops and implements transportation policies, and administers many related acts and regulations as well as federal-provincial funding programs, including the Building Canada Fund. The Ministry opens up B.C. through innovative, forward-thinking transportation strategies that move people and goods safely, and fuel out provincial economy. Improvement of vital infrastructure is a key goal, along with enhancing the competitiveness of B.C.’s transportation industries, reducing transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions and providing B.C. with a safe and reliable highway system.

Major projects at the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure include upgrades and replacements of highway infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels etc.).  These projects include a variety of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as:

  • Variable speed limits
  • Lighting systems
  • Dynamic Message signs
  • Heating and cooling systems
  • Land control
  • Fibre network
  • Fog detection
  • Sensors (for various uses)

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree in computer science field or business or equivalent and four years related experience; or
  • Diploma in computer science field or business or equivalent and six years related experience; or
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent and ten years of related experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience supervising employees, project teams, or contractors.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a senior technical architect or equivalent senior technical role.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in software development, including integration and continuous development environments.
  • Experience working with a variety of remote data systems and technologies.
  • Experience managing Industrial Control System (ICS) technology components throughout their life cycle.
  • Experience with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and/or Open Platform Communications (OPC) systems.
  • Experience with Video Collection and/or Distribution Systems.

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Experience with industrial field devices, data flow and/or integration with IT systems
