Salary Range: $35,000 (starting salary)
Term: To March 31, 2017 with a possibility of extension

The Junior Communications Officer is involved in supporting all aspects of the development and implementation of Native Women’s Association of Canada’s internal and external communications strategies. The Junior Communications Officer, with direction from Senior Management and the Communications Director, is responsible for promoting and protecting NWAC’s reputation by developing and executing media relations and public relations strategies, planning for brand building/innovation/corporate promotions, performing social media activities, and conducting internal communications and corporate communications/corporate affairs initiatives.

- Collaborate with Communications Director and subject matter experts in a timely manner to determine appropriate media responses.
- Develop written materials including press releases, Q&A’s, media standby statements on brand and corporate issues as required by NWAC and directed by Communications Director.
- Assist in the development and implementation of Brand PR programs to support brand building initiatives/innovation/corporate promotions.
- Support Communications Director by doing timely research to ensure message is accurate
- Accept notices and evaluate National events and disseminate appropriately to staff, senior managers, and community.
- Support Communications Director to collaborate with employee groups and cross-functional teams as needed and help provide creative solutions for communications.
- Initiate with Communications Directors support and direction relationships with external corporate and local community events in support of NWAC.
- Develop and implement a social media plan/strategy that will enhance the image of NWAC and provide a nationally cohesive view of issues concerning Indigenous women in Canada, engage individuals in order to add value to our community, and promote the projects of NWAC in a way that is specific, measurable, and attainable as directed by Communications Director and Senior Management.
- Be the first response to incoming and outgoing social media working as directed by Communications Director and Senior Management.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English or related discipline preferred.
- Knowledge of communications and the social context of Indigenous women and girls.
- Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications with strong writing and editorial abilities.
- Bilingual in French desirable.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, wire services, media monitoring software and other public relations tools.
- Working knowledge of social media best practices and familiarity with social media platforms.
- Working knowledge of social media monitoring platforms.
- Must be able to meet tight deadlines and execute flawlessly on projects in a fast-paced, often pressured environment and see a project through to completion.
- Must have the ability to work effectively in a team.
- Must be capable of maintaining confidentiality with a high level of accuracy regarding information.
- The ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and work effectively with all levels of employees is critical.
- Travel may be required.
- Ability to attend and conduct presentations.
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
- Overtime as required.
- Lifting or moving up to 10 lbs. may be required.
