We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Lab Coordinator: Computer Science.
Under the direction of the Departmental Chair for Physics and Computer Science, The Computer Science Lab Instructor is responsible for lab-based instruction in computing science, and for providing technical and professional computing support within the Department of Physics and Computer Science. They develop laboratory content, are responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of labs in computing science, and ensure that the labs’ outcomes contribute to the educational goals of the Department. The Lab Instructor is responsible for creating, evaluating, and revising experiments, manuals, and other materials used in the labs, and for training and supervising student teaching assistants. They act as a resource for students in computing. The Lab Instructor works in conjunction with faculty members concerning course and lab content to ensure that learning outcomes of computer science courses are met.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus. The normal hours of work fall between 8:30 am to 10:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to changing lab schedules. The departmental chair will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week, and schedule will be set on a semester basis.
- materials for computer science labs and tutorials, in-lab and tutorial instruction, lab manuals and documentation, quizzes, and exams; routinely reviews and updates these materials;
- Ensures the labs’ smooth and efficient operation; including trouble shooting of computer equipment and software issues to ensure that labs are prepared, delivered, and administered each week; adapts lab requirements as necessary due to unforeseen circumstances in the lab;
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of student instructional assistants and markers; makes recommendations to the Department Chair regarding the number of instructional assistants and markers required for relevant labs;
- Instructs lab and tutorial sessions, including a review of theory/background information;
- Manages marks and records of student participation for the lab/tutorial component of each course;
- Tutors students individually and in groups, as needed, during regularly scheduled office hours;
- Supports students in the development of professional work habits and efficient use of finite resources; pedagogical objectives include improving student skill in tackling problems, relating and working with peers, time management, choosing efficient learning techniques, and structured approaches;
- Establishes marking methods for lab/tutorial exercises and exams; evaluates methods and results to assure uniform and fair practices;
- tests, evaluates, and sets up software and hardware that may be used in the labs; makes recommendations for software and equipment purchases required to create or update experiments; ensures that non-working equipment or software is repaired or replaced;
In conjunction with other Lab Coordinators for Computer Science this position will assist with the hiring, training and supervision of approximately 30 Instructional Assistants.
- experience in a university or college setting;
- Advanced keyboarding skills required;
- Masters’ Degree in Computer Science;
- Ability to adapt to the rapid evolution of computing course material;
- Currency in software languages, development tools and techniques;
- Skill in software development, documentation, archiving, and maintenance;
- Ability to meet the hands-on learning needs of junior computing students, including adapting instructional tools to meet these needs;
- Pedagogical skill in optimizing the operation and educational value of formal computing labs;
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing;
- Well-developed team management, organizational, and leadership skills; exceptional attention to detail
