Seed Orchard Labourer
Up to three seasonal auxiliary positions are available for 3-5 weeks.
An eligibility list may be established.
The Labourer position is responsible for picking cones and carrying out a variety of general labour activities relating to the care and maintenance of seed orchards.
The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is responsible for stewardship of Provincial Crown land and natural resources. Overseeing a land base of 94.8 million hectares, the Ministry supports the sustainable management of forest, mineral and land resources, the prosperity, viability and competitiveness of industries that use them, and public access for a wide range of activities such as hunting, fishing and recreation. The Ministry is responsible for policy, development, operational management and implementation, and oversees over 50 statutes and associated regulations.
The mission of the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch is to enhance the value, resilience and conservation of BC’s forest genetic resources. The Seed Production section manages five provincial seed orchards which currently produce 55% of the improved tree seed supply, and are operated on a cost recovery basis.

To be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:
Manual labour or outdoor working experience; prefer experience working with plants; i.e. tree planter, gardener, landscaper, orchard worker, and cone picking, or equivalent training and experience.
Physically fit and able to lift supplies (i.e. bags of fertilizer, cones buckets, etc.) and operate equipment (i.e. ATVs, orchard lifts, pruners, weed eaters, mowers, etc.) on an on-going basis.
Able to work outdoors in all types of weather, including cold and wet weather, and with potential allergens such as pollen, grass, insects, chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers; as well as ability to work at heights using lifts and ladders.
Basic knowledge of safe work practices and a good safety attitude.
Ability to follow instructions/requirements, complete tasks on time and work independently and in a team.
Demonstrated ability to read labels and instructions and communicate clearly.
Completion of an ATV safety course if driving quads is expected.
