Solicitor, Legal Counsel Level 1, 2 or 3

Deliver professional legal advice and assist as a legal advisor with the Ministry of Justice

Salary (based on year of call):
Legal Counsel 1: $95,861.74 – $101,652.52 (in 4th to 5th year since call)
Legal Counsel 2: $108,412.00 – $140,596.80 (in 6th to 11th year since call)
Legal Counsel 3: $144,776.05 – $166,254.06 (in 12th year since call or more)

The Ministry of Justice, as represented by the Attorney General, is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB’s clients include all ministries of the government, Cabinet and certain public agencies.

LSB is seeking a solicitor with at least three years of call to provide advice in connection with:
⦁    Local government matters (including several local government related statutes)
and some or all of the following:
⦁    University Endowment Lands (University Endowment Land Act)
⦁    Office of the BC Athletic Commissioner (Athletic Commissioner Act)
⦁    Building Policy (includes building legislation and the BC Building Code)
⦁    Housing Policy (includes legislation related to BC Housing Management Commission and the Homeowner Protection Office)
⦁    Safety Standards Branch (Safety Standards Act and the B.C. Safety Authority Act)
⦁    matters related to multiculturalism
⦁    real property taxation (including the Property Transfer Tax Act, Home Owner Grant Act, Taxation (Rural Area) Act and other property taxation statutes)
⦁    the Assessment Act (and regulations)

Qualifications for this role include:
⦁    Eligible for Membership in the Law Society of British Columbia
⦁    Level dependant on years of call (Up to five years of call for Legal Counsel 1, six to eleven years of call for Legal Counsel 2, and twelve or more years of call for Legal Counsel 3)
⦁    Knowledge of government policy and operations is an asset
⦁    Very strong academic records, clerkships and relevant publications are assets.
