Legal Secretary
Salary:  $40,998.81 to $46,409.47 annually

The Aboriginal Law and Litigation Group, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of Justice, is recruiting up to two skilled and knowledgeable legal secretaries with current civil litigation experience for a permanent, full time position.

Duties include providing legal secretarial and administrative assistance to barristers in the preparation of correspondence, pleadings, arguments, applications etc., as well as compiling, organizing, binding and serving litigation support materials in proper form and within time guidelines;  managing communication records to ensure completeness, coordinating schedules for examinations, hearings, trials and meetings;  maintaining precedents and bring forward system(s) to ensure that litigation deadlines are not missed, organization of communications with experts and their materials, collecting and organization of periodic legal bulletins and reports, as well as significant file management of large litigation files.  Familiarity with the steps in the flow of litigation is a strong asset, facilitating a pro-active approach to the work.

Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, a high level of initiative, self-motivation and flexibility are required, as well as the ability to work well under pressure.  The candidate must be a team player and be able to work overtime when necessary.  Strong time-management skills and the ability to prioritize are essential.  Exceptional proof-reading and editing skills are required, as well as current litigation experience.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Secondary school graduation is required; a Certificate in Legal Office Administration is preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of satisfactory experience in a legal environment, or its equivalent is required.
  • preference may be given to applicants with more than four years of current litigation experience; and
  • preference may be given to applicants with technical expertise with the Legal Files software program
