BC Timber Sales (BCTS) manages about 20 per cent of the province’s allowable annual cut for Crown timber, generating economic prosperity for British Columbians through the safe, sustainable development and auction of Crown timber.  BCTS operates in 33 communities and directly supports over 8,000 jobs across B.C.

Data from our operations are used to help determine the market value of the timber harvested from public land and ensures British Columbians receive fair value from their timber resources.

BCTS also supports government’s commitment to true, lasting reconciliation with First Nations in BC as we move toward fully adopting and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The goal of BCTS is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the market pricing system through auctions of timber harvested from public land in BC.  BCTS has three objectives supporting its goal:

  • Objective 1: Sell the full BCTS apportionment over the business cycle, consistent with safe practices, sustainable forest management, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
  • Objective 2: Generate direct net revenue and indirect revenue for the Province over the business cycle.
  • Objective 3: Continuous business improvement – within BCTS, across government and with third parties.

The Indigenous Peoples Engagement Officer works within the BCTS business area and across business areas and is instrumental in developing and maintaining positive relationships with Indigenous Peoples to advance BCTS’ business principle dedicated to true and lasting reconciliation. The position supervises Indigenous Peoples Engagement Specialists and leads engagement and reconciliation efforts with Indigenous Peoples. The position also facilitates more complex legal consultation processes with Indigenous Peoples, and leads and

supports the negotiation and implementation of business-to-business and relational agreements that contribute to effective and durable relationships with Indigenous Peoples. The position leads activities where a First Nation overlaps with multiple business areas and in situations involving more complex First Nations interests or initiatives.

Dawson Creek is a historical and beautiful town, with outdoor activities like bird watching and hiking past waterfalls in alpine meadows and mountains ridges. Camping and fishing spots can be found in the provincial parks of Swan Lake and Kiskatina. In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirements as outlined below:

  • Registered, or eligible for registration, with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area, (i.e., Association of BC Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists) and 3 years of experience, gained within the last 5 years, natural resource or Indigenous Peoples relationship management.
  • Experience in successfully negotiating/mediating solutions with Indigenous Peoples’ communities.
  • Must possess at minimum a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License that does not limit or restrict the ability to conduct the duties of the job.

Provisos:

  • Must be willing and able to travel to meet job requirements.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours with limited notice, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and/or rotary winged aircraft and/or watercraft.

Preference Statements:

  • Experience with contract management.
  • Education related to Indigenous Peoples.
  • Experience conducting research and analysis related to land use, resource management, social or economic development issues.
  • Demonstrated experience in interest-based negotiation or mediation.

Please include your registration number with the Association of BC Forest Professionals (ABCFP) within your application as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the ABCFP. If you are not yet registered with the ABCFP, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a registered RPF member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the ABCFP).
