General Accountabilities

Manage and execute the development of new and existing relationships within the provincial government in support of Hydro One’s corporate goals.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Determine, promote and implement key government and external relations strategies, policies and programs in support of Hydro One’s corporate goals and strategy.
  • Provide detailed strategic government and external relations advice and operational support Establish and maintain contacts at the highest levels of the provincial government and external agencies, both political and permanent public service.
  • Being aware of and utilizing key information, including confidential and forward looking information on government policy, external agency directions and Hydro One perspectives.
  • Manage government and external relations activities including:
  • Interactions with various provincial government ministries (e.g. Energy, Environment, MNR, Infrastructure, Finance)
  • Specific support for government initiatives
  • Interfaces with key agencies such as the OPA, the OEB (in conjunction with regulatory affairs), and the IESO
  • Provide support to various lines of business by providing government and external relations advice and support to ensure programs meet their goals, enable process redesign and the improvement and implementation of business change programs, and that LOB programs are clearly understood by Hydro One’s external stakeholders and shareholder.
  • Provide reports and data for corporate purposes, as required.
  • Perform analysis and measure government and external relations performance data to ensure that associated activities are effective and targeted.
  • Ensure availability of appropriate resources for the completion of government and external relations programs.
  • Ensure scope and policy changes, new work methods and program/project objectives are effectively introduced to staff.
  • Manage and supervise staff engaged in the delivery of government and external relations programs and projects.
  • Plan, schedule, organize and assign work to ensure that quality and accuracy of work are maintained and on schedule.
  • Provide advice, guidance and direction to staff in the resolution of work related problems, as well provide clear expectations and performance measures.
  • Provide leadership and be accountable for the successful implementation and delivery of assigned work programs and special projects.
  • Make effective recommendations on human resource issues, including career counselling, hiring, discharge, interviewing, discipline and resolving work performance problems.

Selection Criteria & Essential Competencies

  • Ability to develop strong rapport and relationship with all stakeholder groups, allowing for open and constructive communication and achievement of Corporate and Communications objectives.
  • Ability to think on your feet in difficult and stressful environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear and compelling communication materials, including, but not limited to:
  • correspondence, consultation reports, newsletters, briefing notes, media materials, and brochures.
  • Highly developed organizational, analytical, and conceptual abilities – demonstrated
  • insight and the ability to establish innovative solutions to complex issues
  • 10 years of Public Relations experience
  • Demonstrates principled leadership, reliability, judgment, and sound business ethics.
  • Team leadership – proven ability to take a role as leader of a team or other group
  • Analytical thinking – ability to understand a situation by segmenting and tracing implications step by step
  • Client –Service Orientation – desire to help or serve others, to meet their needs
  • Developing Others – takes action to foster the long-term learning and development of others
  • Directness – able to insist others comply with one’s wishes where the power of one’s position is used appropriately and effectively, with the long-term good of the organization in mind
  • Impact and Influence – able to persuade, convince, influence or impress others
  • Initiative – takes action, proactively doing things and not simply thinking about future actions
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism or Communications
  • Valid Driver’s license required
