Position Summary :

The Faculty of Music, Wilfrid Laurier University, requires part-time contract academic staff (CAS) to teach the course listed below in the Winter Term 2019 to be taught at the Waterloo Campus. Following is a brief description of the course to indicate the content and level of difficulty. We would be happy to provide additional information that may be required.

MU243 Musical Cultures – 0.5 credit
This course will study selected musical cultures with a regional presence, with a particular focus on Indigenous practices. The course will engage students in a study of musical cultures and will include an experiential component. When appropriate, students shall be engaged in observation of, and reflection upon, selected musical practices in authentic performance contexts. An expectation for the course is that students will understand the role of music in Indigenous cultures, the impacts of colonization, and how music can contribute both to Indigenous culture revitalization and to reconciliation initiatives.

This appointment will be for 12 contact hours of the above course, and the successful candidate will co-teach and co-develop the course with a full-time faculty member. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous faculty at the University, Wilfrid Laurier University invites applications from First Nations, Métis and Inuit candidates to fill this appointment. Candidates will have teaching experience and background in the area of Indigenous music and cultures in Canada. Candidates will also have knowledge of Indigenous histories and ways of knowing, as well as knowledge of historical and contemporary impacts of colonization on Indigenous peoples. Preference will be given to candidates with university teaching experience, and knowledge of contemporary and historical music practices specific to the Haldimand Tract. Winter Term – Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:00 – 2:20pm.

Rate of pay for 0.5 undergraduate and graduate intramural courses: $ 7500.00 plus 4% in lieu of benefits and 4% in lieu of vacation. Total classroom hours for a 0.5 credit weight course: 36 hours.

Qualifications – Other :

Required specializations:

– Teaching experience in music practices within Indigenous cultures in Ontario, with a preference of knowledge of music practices within the Haldimand Tract.

– Working knowledge of Indigenous music and cultures, as well as Indigenous knowledge, histories, and contemporary contexts, and impacts of colonization.

– Demonstrated connections to nations and/or Indigenous communities within Ontario, particularly, but not exclusively, to the Haldimand Tract.
