We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Network Engineer – Security.

The Network Engineer – Security is part of the ICT-Infrastructure Network and Telecommunication team responsible for the design and operation of the university-wide network and telecommunications infrastructure. This position provides expertise in network security aspects and reports to the Manager, ICT Infrastructure.

The network infrastructure supports data, voice, video conferencing, streaming and other communication transmissions between campus locations and the Internet.  The infrastructure consists of, but is not limited to:

    • Network hardware such as routers, switches, gateways, firewall/IPS, wireless management, VoIP, and monitoring/notification equipment
    • Physical and telecom room hardware such as fiber, copper, racks, and uninterruptable power supplies
    • Emerging technologies relating to clouds, next generation firewall, wireless connectivity and other technologies that support the academic advancement of the university

The position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus.  The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaborations with departments at the University and external partners.

The incumbent has shared responsibility within the team for daily monitoring and maintenance of the network, and for analysis of network behavior, capacity planning and network design.  The incumbent will also assist in the creation and maintenance of accurate and up-to-date network configuration documentation including procedures, standards and guidelines.

There are often frequent interruptions, requiring flexibility and the ability to multitask. As the services provided by this position are 24/7 operations, the network engineer may be required to work outside normal business hours (call-back basis) and may be required to be on call.  When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.

Accountabilities : Network Management

  • Assist with capacity planning, expansion, and upgrades of active network components at all campus locations and clouds
  • Assist with the management and planning of the wired and wireless networks (hardware and software)
  • Install, configure, and maintain network devices as required and following Laurier standards
  • Shared responsibility for cable plant management, including upgrades and repair such a switch equipment replacement and repatching
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of network equipment, configuration and design
  • Develop communications for the user community about impending changes

Network Operation


  • Assist with monitoring and support of the University network and security infrastructure, identify issues and performance problems
  • Work with vendors, telecom providers and other ICT technology teams to bring issues to resolution and/or take actions to prevent future occurrences
  • Daily monitoring and maintenance procedures
  • Develop and document network changes and procedures to enhance and troubleshoot performance, reliability and availability issues
  • Track and update activity in a ticket tracking system

Network Security


  • Comply and assist with the development and enforcement of policies and procedures relating to governance, compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Implement and enforce industry standards and best practices related to network security
  • Assist with the implementation of security policies to different network components (firewall, switches, etc)
  • Participate in network security exercises and audits required to keep university networks secured
  • Assist with the configuration and management of network security devices (for example a centralized logging system, data analyzer, etc)

Qualifications :


  • University Degree in Computer Science, Network Engineering, or a related field
  • A minimum of 4 years related experience managing and supporting large network environment
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of internet technologies and networking protocols
  • Advanced knowledge of network security standards and procedures
  • Demonstrated experience working with network security devices (firewalls, IPS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience in configuration, support and maintenance of core, distribution and edge switches
  • Demonstrated experience using network monitoring and security tools to solve complex network problems, improve network performance and identify security threat
  • Equipment specific training for networks and server hardware from industry leading vendors such as Avaya, Cisco, Palo Alto, F5 networks
  • Advanced knowledge and working experience with network protocols and configurations including OSPF, BGP, HSRP, VRRP, VPC, multicast, VoIP, QoS, VLANs, VPN, Switching, Trunking, NAT, PAT, ACL, SNMP, and VSS
  • Working experience with scripting languages (Python, Bash, Perl, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Excellent problem solving ability in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of operating systems such as Windows, Macs and Linux
  • Understanding of network parameters in IaaS – cloud environments
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with users of varying technical expertise
  • Strong organizational skills, accuracy and attention to details
  • Demonstrated ability to document network policies and procedures
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Brings forward ideas to improve maintenance – takes action to resolve matters prior to escalating to others
  • Deals with difficult situations with tact and diplomacy seeking to resolve problems
  • Ability to work in, and adapt to, a rapidly changing and highly technical environment

Grade : WLUSA-10
Salary : $38.67 – $45.52
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, continuing position effective immediately.
