Reporting to the Director of the Student Wellness Centre (SWC), the Nurse Manager role within the Student Wellness Centre will be an integral part of the Student Wellness Centre management team. Laurier’s Student Wellness Centre provides student-centered, accessible and confidential services that enhance students’ personal and academic success at university. The multi-disciplinary SWC team is staffed by professionals with a special interest in providing service and coordinated health care and wellness support to university students. The team is currently comprised of medical physicians, a psychiatrist, counsellors, registered nurses, a mental health nurse, clinic aide, medical receptionists, health educators, chiropractor, massage therapy, and a dietitian. The SWC is also the University’s primary first aid station for Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
Within this diverse and committed team, the Nurse Manager is responsible for ensuring efficient day to day operations and a high level of service and care within the Student Wellness Centre. In terms of supervision, the manager oversees and is responsible for the nurse team (5),the reception team (6) and one clinic aide, including supervision, hiring, and performance evaluations.
In addition to ensuring the efficient and responsible delivery of primary health care to students, the Nurse Manager is responsible for providing leadership and team development for reception, nursing and clinic aid team, ensuring that students are provided with confidential, comprehensive, preventative, educational, restorative, and supportive services which promotes optimum student wellness as an essential support for student success.
The Nurse Manager will also work in a professional capacity on the team including physical/mental health assessments, crisis management, and referral where appropriate.
The Nurse Manager will develop and maintain contacts within the university community and various professionals and institutions in the local community. The primary focus of the Nurse Manager is on student care, education and support. The Nurse Manager handles confidential medical information daily, works independently and must exercise judgment and discretion in the performance of their duties.
Responsible for the efficient operation of the multi-disciplinary clinic in order to serve the health and wellness needs of students:
Manages day-to-day clinic functioning including staffing, clinic flow, patient concerns and complaints, development of procedures for nurses, front desk, triage, professional service capacity, and hours of operation.
Develop and administer policies and procedures for the safe provision of health care delivery, including medical directives for RN’s, in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
Provides administrative leadership in the coordination of services, including the development of departmental policies and procedures.
Accountable for the correct billing to outside parties (OHIP, UHIP etc.) and the correct remuneration to professional staff paid through the clinic (physicians etc.)
Accountable for the administration for all client/patient records, including the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system, and liaising with the system administrator (ITC Waterloo) for server maintenance and troubleshooting.
Work with SWC director to ensure that the clinic is meeting the mandate and guidelines from Public Health throughout the academic year, including the prevention and reporting of communicable diseases.
Responsible for the management of the operating budget for medical clinical services and ensuring that medical supplies and equipment are available and up to date.
Liaise with pharmaceutical and medical supply companies to receive current literature and promotional materials for clinic use.
Provide strategic planning and innovative program development within the multidisciplinary team and the university environment.
Serve as the Acting Director in the absence of the Director of the SWC
Serves as a resource for campus partners surrounding health related issues and concerns, and acts as a liaison with on and off campus partners.
Leadership, Development, and Supervision of all direct reports:
The multi-disciplinary approach to student wellness provides unique opportunities to lead people who traditionally may not have worked in this collective and collaborative way. The Nurse Manager will use practiced leadership and conflict resolution strategies, strong communications skills, and mentorship to seek common understanding between clinic professionals on commonly held goals: to provide the best possible care for students, and to create an atmosphere of collegial respect.
The Nurse Manager provides leadership to the reception, nurse and clinic aid team and is responsible for developing and promoting programs for continuing education/staff development of nurses, reception and clinic aide roles.
Human Resource management of the reception, nurse and clinic aid staff including recruitment, hiring and orientation, and performance review processes
Review and verification of payroll.
While the contract physicians, psychiatrist and allied health professionals (massage and chiropractic) report to the SWC Director, the Nurse manager will assist in scheduling duties related to these roles.
Professional Nursing Responsibilities:
Responsible for various duties in a professional capacity including physical/mental health assessments, counselling, and referral where appropriate and administers medical care according College of Nursing standards
Acts as contact for students in distress, or referred by other student service departments, or for university staff who have concerns about students.
Works closely with the Lead Physician and Contract Psychiatrist to co-ordinate activities of the circle of care, campus resources and community services to provide individual support as required.
Act in accordance with professional and legislative standards regarding confidentiality e.g. Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and duty of care.
Maintains / keeps current awareness of the mental health resources available in the community and will maintain a good relationship with the mental health personnel and programs provided in our Local Health Integration Network (LHIN).
Assess and facilitate coordinated care with the multidisciplinary team for students presenting with complex mental health and psychological issues.
Provide risk management/support for vulnerable students/patients presenting in crisis.
Work with the SWC team and various campus departments when required to develop and facilitate psycho-educational programs.
Aids in the awareness on campus about Health and Mental Health needs and supports.
Develop end administer policies and procedures, for the safe provision of health care delivery, including medical directives for RNs and RPNs in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
Assure that the medical record keeping at the SWC meets professional standards and that the collection, use and disclosure of health information meet PHIPA guidelines.
Develop and promote programs for continuing education/staff development of RNs; facilitate team meetings for the RN staff and report concerns to the Director of SWC.
Order birth control medications to meet the needs of students at peak time, and medical supplies for the clinic throughout the year.
Organize the annual flu vaccination clinic – including staffing supplies, process and marketing.
Master of Science Nursing or Nurse Practitioner
Current registration with one or more of the following:
College of Nurses of Ontario
Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO)
Years and Type of Experience:
5 years recent experience in a clinical practice setting, preferably in a post secondary, or community health setting.
Proven clinical leadership/experience working in a health management/administration role, preferably in a postsecondary setting
Proficiency in budget planning and financial administration.
Demonstrated budgetary management skills
Skills and Abilities:
Proven clinical leadership and critical thinking are essential for success in this role as the incumbent will lead an interdisciplinary team and programs which ensures quality services and care for students
Hands on, energetic leader
Effective human resource, financial and information management skills
Awareness/experience related to young adult health care including mental health issues, sexual health and diversity/cultural issues
Strong understanding and knowledge of electronic medical record/billing systems (e.g. PS Suite EMR);
Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office
Deep commitment to and understanding of patient-centered care
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent organizational, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal and conflict management/resolution skills
Familiarity with professional licensing bodies, collective agreements and provincial and federal health legislation
Solid foundation in current health promotion theory and delivery models
Grade : MG-2B
Salary : $73,993 – $92,491
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, limited term position with an expected start date of Oct 9, 2018 until November 4, 2019.
