Henry Coaster Memorial School is accepting applications for the remainder of the 2016-17 school year (with a possible extension) for:

  • One (1) Grade 7 & 8 Teacher

Summary of Duties/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will lead students to achieve academic success and will demonstrate and perform the following professional skills, abilities and responsibilities:

  • Strong classroom management skills that transfer and support the school environment within the class, school and beyond;
  • An ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of the learners;
  • Strong communication skills to engage family and community members (guardians, counselors, elders) in supporting student learning
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records;
  • Plan and meet with IPRC team and other professionals to discuss individual students’ needs and progress, as required;
  • Integrate technology in the classroom;
  • Attend staff meetings and contribute to the school environment by facilitating and/or serving on one the various school committees or extracurricular activities
  • Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine student strengths and areas of need;
  • Provide direction and support to classroom supports and volunteers;
  • Perform administrative duties such as recess duty, hall monitoring, and bus loading and unloading; and
  • Contribute to the professional learning community by contributing your strengths and supporting the learning of others.

Summary of basic qualifications that the candidate must have and indicate:

  • A. and B.Ed with Intermediate specialization
  • Membership in good standing with OCT or temporary letter of approval
  • Special Education AQ, Part 1
  • Appreciation and understanding of Aboriginal culture and traditions
  • Experience living in northern communities and working in First Nation schools would be considered an asset

About the school and community:

Henry Coaster Memorial School is managed by Marten Falls Education Authority and is located in Ogoki Post, Ontario. The community is also known as “Marten Falls First Nation.”

The student body at HCMS is made up of about 47 students from Kindergarten to grade 8 that attend the school. Teachers teach split grades: K4-K5, grade 1-2, grade 3-4, grade 5-6, grade 7-8 and Ojibway. Classroom numbers range from 10-15 students. Henry Coaster Memorial School also requires a Special Education Resource Teacher to be part of its team. HCMS has Teacher Assistants and Education Assistants on staff to support student learning and teachers, as required. Further to this, HCMS has a full time principal and teaching vice principal.

Marten Falls First Nation has about 300 people living on-reserve. It is a fly-in and remote community with no road access. Community members, including school staff, fly ‘Nakina Air’ to travel in and out of the community.
