The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. We are seeking talented individuals who are motivated to share their passion and commitment to join our team. Together, we aim to enhance the public’s understanding of human rights, to promote respect for others, and to encourage reflection and dialogue.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager, Program Delivery and Services, with daily supervision by Assistant Managers, Program Interpreters deliver education and public programs to a wide range of audiences in order to provide engaging and meaningful visitor experiences and opportunities for learning, dialogue and reflection at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

Education and public programs include school programs, guided tours, in-gallery presentations, dialogue sessions, talks, presentations, performances and more. Audiences include Canadian and international visitors of varying ages, backgrounds, interests and abilities visiting on their own or in organized groups as well as others who wish to engage with the Museum from a distance. Programs take place primarily within the Museum but occasionally involve programming in other locations.

The majority of this role (90%) is related to the delivery of museum programs. The balance (10%) is spent on researching exhibition topics, special projects, and other tasks as assigned.

Delivery of educational and public programs to a wide variety of audiences

  • Develop a high level of knowledge and familiarity with the Museum’s exhibit content, an understanding of how various public audiences relate to it, and strategies for delivering complex and sensitive content to multiple audiences.
  • Deliver education programs to school-aged children from grades K-12.
  • Deliver guided tours on a variety of themes to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Deliver various activities and events, including talks, demonstrations, workshops and hands-on interactions in the Museum to school groups, general public and professional groups.
  • Deliver targeted presentations and activities on specific topics for specialized audiences, partners and stakeholders.
  • Proactively engage with visitors in the Museum’s galleries and the public at large and help them discover the Museum according to their interests.
  • Facilitate discussion and dialogue and employ appropriate techniques to de-escalate emotional situations.
  • Lead and deliver programs employing informal and formal learning pedagogy, dialogue techniques and approaches, and other informal learning techniques and approaches.
  • Help visitors navigate the Museum’s mobile program and other in-gallery media programs to participate in digital programming offered on various platforms.
  • Provide daily feedback on the quality and effectiveness of programs to leadership. Write daily reports (as assigned).

Interpretive Program Support

  • Invite feedback from the public on the quality of the visitor experience and encourage them to complete a visitor feedback form.
  • Participate in brainstorming and idea generation activities, and provide program delivery expertise in various stages of program development (as assigned).
  • Lead the interpretation team (Program Interpreter lead for school program delivery, evenings, and weekend events).
  • Provide logistical support for programs and activities whether they are in the classrooms, gallery spaces or other programming venues. This may include moving furniture, setting up equipment, preparing props and program materials.
  • Support program administration.
  • Administer evaluation surveys and other visitor research activities such as tracking and timing visitor behaviour.
  • Draft activity and program descriptions (as assigned).
  • Support other education, public and professional programming activities and events, as assigned.
  • Participate in activities related to marketing media and promotion of public programs.
  • Act as a Museum ambassador.
  • Assist in training Interpretive Guides on tour content and delivery techniques.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of post-secondary education (university or college) in human rights, history, museum studies, education, or another relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of education and experience. Note: candidates must clearly demonstrate how their education is relevant to the position.
  • Minimum 12 months of experience delivering interpretation or education programs for a museum, school, historic site or related cultural or educational organization or attraction
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering public, cultural or educational programs to a variety of audiences and ages
  • Knowledge of interpretation theory and best practices
  • Knowledge and experience in various interpretive techniques such as storytelling, demonstration, theatre programs, and guided tours
  • Strong presentation and communication skills, written and oral with the ability to listen carefully to others
  • Ability to communicate accurately to inform, influence and encourage participation
  • Knowledge of the role of interpretation relevant to the CMHR mandate
  • Advanced knowledge and awareness of human rights (past and present)
  • Ability to deliver programs in both English and French (language assessment will be part of selection process)

Desired Qualifications

  • Heritage Presenter certification through Emerit, or other similar interpretation certification
  • Three to five years of public or educational program delivery
  • Experience working with children and adults
  • Knowledge of human rights subject matter
  • Knowledge of Canadian history
  • Experience in providing programming recommendations and writing reports
  • Experience in program delivery in arts and cultural organizations

Official Language Proficiency

  • Bilingual CBC: Written comprehension (advanced), written expression (intermediate), oral proficiency (advanced) in French

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Work is in an open public environment, with some office work.
  • A considerable amount of standing and walking is required, and the ability to navigate independently throughout the Museum.
  • Ability to lift and move program materials and equipment
  • Required to wear a Canadian Museum for Human Rights issued uniform
  • May require working irregular hours (evenings and weekends) from time to time
