Position Description:
A part-time, contract Research Associate is required for one year to oversee a project in a Southwestern Ontario First Nation. The Research Associate will oversee a project funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) Health System Research Fund (HSRF) that will use local data and participatory action research to develop a community wellness strategy in a First Nation community. This position is located in the Sarnia area.

Reporting to the Program Leads and the Project Coordinator, the Research Associate will work collaboratively as part of a team of researchers and community partners to coordinate data collection and develop community wellness strategies in the First Nation. The Research Associate will draw on community survey data on a wide range of issues, including culturally-appropriate measures related to: community strengths and challenges; historical loss and unresolved grief; attendance at and the intergenerational impact of residential and Indian day schools; social capital; and racism. Data also pertain to service utilization, social support, substance use, stress, depression, anxiety, and experiences of violence. These data will be utilized to improve understanding of mental health, substance use and violence (MSV) issues, including their nature/extent/co-occurrence and linkages with individual and community strengths/stressors. Additionally, system weaknesses and strengths in addressing MSV issues have been identified through engagement of consumers/patients and service providers. Through analyses of these data, the Research Associate will work with community members to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive, culturally appropriate wellness strategy addressing a selected priority area which respects and prioritizes the experiences of First Nations people.

This individual will work closely with other team members in the preparation of materials for participant recruitment, oversee and coordinate the participatory action research (PAR) process, and assist the PAR team in developing the community wellness strategy. This individual will also assist with knowledge transfer activities, oversee and conduct literature reviews, contribute to the writing of reports and KTE materials and papers for submission to scientific journals and presentation of results to scientific and non-scientific audiences at conferences and KTE events.

This part-time position will have varying hours.  This position will be based in Aamjiwnaang First Nation with initial orientation and training in Toronto and London.  Occasional meetings will take place in London throughout the project.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a Masters in health or social sciences or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered. The candidate will have experience in project coordination and will also have extensive knowledge and experience in the field of mental health and be capable of working in a multidisciplinary team environment with a variety of community partners. Demonstrated experience in working with First Nations communities is essential. Familiarity with the First Nations principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP) is required. The individual will also have a strong ability to prepare plans, reports, presentations, and correspondence in a clear and concise manner. Superior communication (verbal/written), interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and possess the capacity for self-directed work, but will also excel in a team environment.
