The Senior Network Specialist is responsible for telecommunications design and network implementation related to the existing IP MPLS network, optical network and the expansion of the network to deliver additional capacity, reach new service territories and support the introduction of new products and services into the network. The position will work closely with cross-functional teams to deliver on projects and customer specific implementations utilizing best-of-breed methodologies.

You will support and advise the Manager, Network Engineering in analyzing and implementing alternative technology and network delivery models for the Commercial LOB. Your natural ability to establish strong working relationships is exactly what we are seeking. General Accountabilities:

  • Telecommunications design and network implementation related to the existing IP MPLS network and optical network.
  • Define telecommunication network projects to successfully deliver the network engineering capital plan.
  • Design and build high availability/fault tolerant/secure optical network and IP solutions utilizing current engineering methodologies.
  • Evaluate new or revised telecommunication/data/optical products, software or hardware, independently or in conjunction with staff from other units, to confirm compliance with Hydro One Telecom specifications and standards.
  • Perform proof of concept testing to determine applicability and adaptability of highly complex telecommunication technologies. Evaluate alternatives and make recommendations.
  • Design and implementation support to Product Development team for the launch products and services and new technologies.
  • Establish engineering standards and ensure practices are met in field implementations.
  • Develop, support and administer processes to achieve committed service levels and reliability.
  • Provide technical support to the operations team to troubleshoot and diagnose networking issues.
  • Interface with other units to address any potential customer concerns or issues.
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of advanced telecommunication/data/optical technologies.
  • Perform capacity management, trend facilities, recommend or take action to improve efficiency, effectiveness, reliability.
  • Perform network traffic captures and perform analyses to correct faults, optimize equipment and network performance.
  • Negotiate and manage project deliverables, schedules, timelines and costs from project initiation to deployment and business readiness.  Communicate to all stakeholders on project progress against designed plan, requirements, quality measures, compliance with processes, highlight risks and issues, drive resolution and escalate when required.
  • Manage vendor and external resource deliverables, commitments and communication.
  • Execute plans to initiate, track and coordinate network engineering projects.
  • Leverage procurement process to coordinate the activities of all vendors in multivendor situations and influence suppliers towards development activities specifically useful to Hydro One Telecom.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or equivalent work experience.
  • Requires technical expertise and experience in the areas of IP networking, Ethernet routing and switching, optical networking, control systems and IT networking including the design, implementation, commissioning, performance analysis and troubleshooting of these technologies and networks.
  • Requires expertise in communications network protocols and data structures related to diverse telecommunications systems.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the completion of 4 years of University training or equivalent work experience.
  • Requires extensive technical experience with the application of telecommunications and information management methods to a large and diverse customer population.
  • Business acumen must include experience in preparing business cases for network deployment projects.
  • Ability to create financial models focusing on profitability and ROI.
  • Ability to analyze cost variances and trends.
  • 8+ years of successful experience in network design and implementation with technology platforms from Cisco, Juniper and Ciena.
  • Requires strong spoken and written English skills to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
  • Proven and quantifiable track record of over achievement.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Motivated, self-starter, goal oriented and takes ownership.
  • Exceptional negotiation, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing engagements with vendors, partners and customers.
  • Strong relationship building skills – with both an internal and external focus.
  • Exceptional communication skills – written & verbal, and presentation skills.
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to travel is required. Some business travel required, primarily in Ontario (client, supplier & partner meetings and industry events)
