We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Senior Research Associate (Hydrological and Meteorological).
The Senior Research Associate will be part of a highly productive team of university researchers in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The primary focus of this position will be to conduct research on changing hydrometeorology in the NWT. The incumbent will operate and maintain equipment, and provide guidance and oversight of student activities and provide assistance with data analysis and interpretation.
The position will be based at Laurier’s Yellowknife Research Office, and the incumbent will assist in the co-ordination of field-level assessments at various Northern locations. The incumbent will be required to travel and participate in field work that is expected to occur a few times per year. This may include several weeks of time in remote locations each travel period.
In addition, this position will provide leadership, management and oversight of scientific research at the Laurier’s Yellowknife Research Office. This position will support knowledge mobilization through community engagement initiatives and participation in meetings of importance to the Laurier-GNWT Partnership Agreement, Global Water Futures (GWF) and related initiatives. The incumbent will be responsible for representing Laurier at workshops, meetings, and conferences in the NWT. This requires familiarity with all Laurier research programmes across the NWT and presenting high-level overviews of this work when necessary. This position is expected to engage with First Nation groups, governments, NGOs, and other academic institutions in the North.
Accountabilities :Leadership for Laurier’s Yellowknife Research Office:
Serve as senior person at Laurier’s Yellowknife office for reporting and managing;
Serve as key contact for the coordination of logistics in the NWT for all Laurier associated researchers;
Promote the GNWT-Laurier Partnership through building collaborative networks with government agencies, local communities and researchers;
Engage in outreach activities on Laurier’s behalf where possible, including giving talks on Laurier research initiatives across the territory, engage with First Nations groups and NGOs;
Serve as a member of the WLU-GNWT science committee;
Attend territorial workshops/meetings/conferences where Laurier attendance is essential or beneficial.
Provide logistical and technical support for GWF researchers conducting hydrometeorological studies in the NWT;
Maintain, operate, and/or install field instrumentation and conduct field work for sample collection;
Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and partnership members as required, in field collection techniques in summer and winter conditions;
Work in field conditions with collaborating partners, including community members and partnering institutions;
Liaise with other academic, government and Indigenous community members as appropriate;
Maintain high degree of consideration for self and team safety in extreme field environments.
Research and Administrative Support:
Co-ordinate and oversee the progress of the activities of the Yellowknife-based research technicians
Help in shaping and designing project goals and long term objectives and actions;
Strong interpersonal skills for interactions with community members and partner organizations;
Assist in preparing annual reports, presentations, manuscripts for peer review, proposals and budgets relating to northern GWF projects;
Collaborates with other technicians, principal investigators, etc., on various aspects of GWF as well as with other intersecting laboratories at Laurier and partner organizations.
Assist in data analysis and interpretation;
Organize, structure, and summarize collected data, in the form of spreadsheets, databases, and reports using appropriate software;
Work closely with other data managers in the GWF project to ensure data access, appropriate platforms for data management, etc.
MSc or degree in hydrometeorology or related field, with extensive research experience;
Practical knowledge of hydrometric field instrumentation;
At least two (2) years’ experience working in a comparable research environment;
Strong leadership skills and independence are essential; Supervisory experience an asset;
Experienced with planning and executing complex, interdisciplinary research programmes in remote and logistically challenging regions of the NWT;
Proven ability to work in a team environment withPrincipal Investigators, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other scientists, partner organizations and community members;
Positively interact and work with members of communities and partner organizations;
Experience and confidence in field-based work with preference for remote locations or northern environments;
Interest in and ability to work and live in remote areas in the north for periods of time (weeks);
Demonstrated experience in significant data management an asset;
Experience in writing lab reports and research papers, and making presentations;
Previous publications a definite asset;
A valid G driver’s license is required and willingness to travel and work in northern locations.
Salary Notes : Salary Range: $65 000 to $80 000 plus Northern cost of living allowance.
The position will be based at Laurier’s Yellowknife research office.
This is a full-time, limited term position for 3 years.
