We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Summer Law Student.
Laurier’s Office of General Counsel provides legal services and support throughout the university. The Summer Law Student will assist the General Counsel in all aspects of legal work, including legal research, providing opinions, drafting letters and memoranda, analyzing proposed and existing Laurier policies, reviewing contracts and other matters as they arise. This position will run from May through August, 2018.
This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus. The incumbent provides subject matter expertise to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo Campus, the Brantford Campus, the Toronto office and external partners. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.
Review and revise contracts as required in conjunction with the administration of Laurier’s internal contract repository
Administer and track contracts to ensure compliance with internal processes
Provide guidance to units on various contractual matters
Conduct legal research and analysis on a wide variety of legal issues, case law and legislation
Identify key legal principles within the university context
Analyze Laurier policies as required
Develop draft policy language
Legal Writing and Communication
Drafting legal documents, including letters and memoranda
Attend meetings with internal and external stakeholders, as required
Other duties as instructed by the General Counsel
Education: Successful candidate must be enrolled in law program of student leading to a J.D. or L.LB. degree. Preference will be given to a student completing their second year of legal studies.
Skills and Abilities:
Possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to prepare a variety of legal materials, letters and memos of law
Maintain a high degree of interpersonal skills, professionalism, discretion and confidentiality
Demonstrate good judgment and take initiative as required
Possess strong research and analytical skills to assess the applicability of legal principles, policy and legislation
Proficient in the use of internet, word processing and email applications
Adhere to strict deadlines and time sensitive matters
Salary : $900/week, 35 hours per week
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, limited term position from May to August 2018.
