Position: Transition Coordinator – Matawa Learning Centre


Formed in 1988, Matawa First Nations Management (Matawa) is a Tribal Council providing services to nine member communities in Northern Ontario. The organization is dedicated to providing its members with advisory and support services in the areas of communications, economic development, education, finance and business, health, membership and technical services.

The Matawa Education Department supports quality, accessible, community-based educational services for the eight Matawa First Nations Communities of Aroland, Eabametoong, Nibinamik, Long Lake #58, Ginoogaming, Neskantaga, Marten Falls and Webequie First Nations. In addition to providing advisory services to Education Authorities and Matawa First Nation leadership, the Education Department administers post-secondary support services for five Matawa First Nations; operates the Matawa Learning Centre, a private secondary school located in the Thunder Bay; and coordinates the Student Nutrition Program for six communities.

At this time, Matawa First Nations Management invites applications from qualified applicants for the position of Transition Coordinator in the Matawa Learning Centre (MLC) located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The MLC provides a unique learning environment to support students as they move toward the successful completion of their secondary education and continue on their pathways to work, training or post-secondary education programs.

Position Summary:

The Transition Coordinator will work closely with Matawa students, parents, their reserves and School Administrators, acting as a liaison between students, their receiving school, school boards, and all applicable agencies. The position will will develop student education profiles that identify individual learning needs in order to create transition plans in an effort to support academic and social transitions. This will include, but not be limited to, overseeing and supporting the students’ transition from home to community to a new community, to a new school, to and from mental health facilities, rehabilitation centers, to and from detention centers as well as from child welfare service agencies.

The successful candidate will hold, or be eligible to hold, an Ontario Certificate of Qualification and Registration and be a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers. Expertise or experience in alternative education and/or Aboriginal education would be beneficial.

This position is based in Thunder Bay, but the Transition Coordinator may have to travel around Thunder Bay to monitor and support students in their placements and complete workplace assessments, and may have to travel to Matawa First Nations in all weather. The successful applicant will be required to submit a current Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector, and current “negative” result TB skin test. This is a contract position with possibility of extension, pending funding and a successful performance review.

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A degree in Education, and 5 years successful teaching experience with experience as a secondary school teacher
  • Knowledge and experience in Cooperative Education programs
  • Knowledge and understanding of First Nation education
  • Knowledge of and experience teaching in a private secondary school, including course preparation and record keeping
  • Experience teaching in multi-grade classrooms
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, parents, administration, government and First Nation organizations
  • Knowledge of Ojibway will be considered an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and teaching skills
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License
