1st Annual imagineNATIVE Radio Art Commission

imagineNATIVE is seeking proposals from Indigenous artists from across Canada for its inaugural Radio Art Commission. The selected artist will produce a short radio/sound art piece to premiere at the 12th annual imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival (October 19-23, 2011) in Toronto. “Radio has been a facet of imagineNATIVE’s programming since its inception,” said Jason Ryle, Executive Director. “With this project we want to revitalise the role of radio in the Festival and encourage Indigenous artists to view radio as a vital and dynamic medium for their creative expression. We want to push the boundaries of what’s possible to create ‘art you can hear’.”

Artists are encouraged to be creative in subject matter and format, however, the project must be up to 10 minutes in total length, realistic in scope and achievable with the resources provided. Potential radio/sound art projects include, but are not limited to, soundwalks, soundscapes, acoustic ecology, experimental documentaries, electroacoustic art, documentary poetry, etc. Projects can be on any theme. News reportage and public service announcements are not eligible for this project. Final work must be completed and deliverable to the Festival by September 26, 2011.

Artists do not need prior radio production experience, but must have an interest, and have an independent drive, in experimenting with and producing radio works.

imagineNATIVE will provide a modest bursary of $1,000 to the selected artist, made possible through the support of Astral Radio, Presenter of imagineNATIVE’s Radio Programming. imagineNATIVE will also assist the winning applicant in developing a partnership with local radio station or audio production facility to produce the work. As every project is unique, equipment and facility needs will be established in the development phase. Any additional equipment, facilities, and production costs above and beyond the in-kind services offered by local station partners will be the responsibility of the participant. All other associated costs are to be covered by the participant.

The completed work will be presented during the 2011 Festival and will be available to listen and download as a podcast on the Festival’s website in perpetuity. The artist retains all other rights.

Eligibility Criteria:

• call is open to Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, Inuit, other international Indigenous) candidates with Canadian Citizenship or those with official status within Canada only;
•Projects must be realistic in scope and subject matter as they must be completed and deliverable to the Festival by September 26, 2011;
•Projects must be up to 10 minutes in completed length;
•We strongly encourage applicants who are deadline driven and self-starters;
•Artists who are currently working on commissions received by or through imagineNATIVE for 2011 or 2012 are not eligible to apply for this project;
•Persons contracted by imagineNATIVE for employment are not eligible to apply for this project;
•Travel subsidy and cost of living are not covered by this mentorship.

Your Application Must Include:

• one-page description for a short radio piece up to 10 minutes (state anticipated length). This piece should clearly describe and illustrate your project idea to the selection committee;
• half to one-page statement on why you would like to participate and how you would benefit from this project, and any radio production links you have (local stations, organizations that could assist in producing the work);
• bio (no resumes or CVs please). Please be certain to indicate your past experience with radio or other media arts mediums, if any, and your Indigenous affiliation;
• may provide samples (links) to examples of your previous audio/radio works (2 max.);
