VICTORIA – Government is investing over $2.9 million in 37 post-secondary projects to help Aboriginal students access and complete their studies, announced Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development.“This government is committed to improving the quality of life and education of Aboriginal students and their families,” said Coell. “Encouraging Aboriginal students to start, stay in and succeed in higher learning with the help of special projects like these ensures access to advanced education and training that is inclusive of all British Columbians.”
The projects will benefit Aboriginals across B.C.’s 25 public post-secondary institutions, including an Aboriginal automotive refinishing program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. At the end of this 22-week program, students will have acquired the skills to succeed in the automotive refinishing trade.
The special projects fund enables public post-secondary institutions to provide solutions tailored to support the needs of Aboriginal students in surrounding communities. These solutions will be implemented in partnership with Aboriginal communities and educators to address the government’s education priorities in language, culture and history, adult basic education, teacher training, health sciences, math, sciences and the trades.
The Aboriginal Special Projects fund is part of the ministry’s Aboriginal post-secondary education strategy. In April 2007, Premier Gordon Campbell announced the Province’s $65-million strategy to meet the higher learning commitments in the Transformative Change Accord and Metis Nation Relationship Accord and close the gap in the area of education opportunities between Aboriginal people and other British Columbians.
Since 2001, the Province has provided more than $18 million in funding to 309 special projects benefiting over 6,561 Aboriginal students.
