2017 Lethbridge College Orange Shirt Day

Please join us as Lethbridge College shows its support for “National Orange Shirt Day: every child matters,” a campaign that recognizes the legacy of residential schools in Canada.

Historically, Sept. 30 was chosen for Orange Shirt Day because it was the time of year in which children were taken from their homes and brought to the residential schools. Orange Shirt Day began as a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, B.C., in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Phyllis’ Story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come.

On Sept. 29,  Lethbridge College will recognize Orange Shirt Day with a short program and unveiling of our college’s own orange shirt design. All college students and employees are invited to gather at 10 a.m. in Centre Core for the event. Orange shirts will be available from the bookstore for $10.
