For Immediate Release
Thunder Bay, ON: Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Deputy Grand Chief Mike Metatawabin along with the NAN Women’s Council welcomes over a 100 delegates to the 5th Annual NAN Women’s Forum to Thunder Bay for a weekend of workshops, planning and creating communitybased solutions for individual and community healing.
The conference will explore community-based approaches to various forms of abuse and family violence. The Annual Meeting of the NAN Women’s Council will include an election to determine the Council for the next term. This year’s conference is also monumental as the NAN Women’s Council will determine a path to work with the Women’s Council of Grand Council Treaty #3. “I hope the women have a great time learning from each other and sharing their experiences. This conference not only supports the women of Nishnawbe Aski Nation but empowers them to make change within themselves, their families and within their communities,” said NAN Deputy Grand Chief Mike Metatawabin.
The forum is significant because it is the third time a Women’s Council will be elected and colleagues from Grand Council Treaty #3 will be there to witness the process.
Jackie Fletcher, spokesperson for the NAN Women’s Council, stated, “As representatives of women in NAN territory, we feel that it is vital to be active role models and advocates that determine a path for health and wellness; this is the focus of our conference.”
The conference takes place March 9-11 at the Best Western Nor’Wester Hotel in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation is a political territorial organization representing 49 First Nation communities in James Bay Treaty No. 9 and Ontario portions of Treaty No. 5 – an area covering two thirds of the province of Ontario. www.nan.on.ca
