I am taking full responsibility for holding the Canadian flag upside down at Lakehead University Dec. 9 and during the Idle No More Thunder Bay event at the Department of Indian Affairs on Dec. 10 (front-page photos, Dec. 10, 11). An apology for this is deemed necessary (letter, Dec. 11).

The upside-down flag is not a show of disrespect; we love our land and country. The upside-down flag could be used in opposition to legislation and as a sign of distress when assistance is needed.

We need support and assistance from all who love this country as we, the First Nations people, do! We need your assistance in protecting our Mother Earth, who is being prostituted to other countries. The Conservative government is like a pimp, selling our valuable resources, especially the waters. The flag held upside down is for all people and for the land.
