AIAI Observes Nelson Mandela’s 94th Birthday
For Immediate Release:
July 18, 2012
Toronto, ON — On behalf of the eight member First Nations of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians, we send our deepest respect and best wishes to Mr. Nelson Mandela on the occasion of his 94th birthday.
In giving 67 years of his life to public service, and enduring 28 years as a political prisoner, Mr. Mandela is an icon in the fight against racism and colonial oppression.
Mr. Mandela’s legacy, carried on through the work of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is a message of hope for First Nations in Canada. The atrocities of South Africa’s apartheid regime are mirrored in the actions and policies of the settler governments in Canada. Mr. Mandela and his supporters fought against forced relocation from Indigenous homelands, legislated cultural genocide, and political oppression; the very same struggles that continue to face Indigenous peoples in Canada.Mr. Mandela, we honour and share your principles of equality and freedom. We wish you peace, good health, and happiness.
The AIAI is mandated as a political territorial organization to defend and enhance the Indigenous and Treaty rights of its eight member First Nations. Visit them online at www.aiai.on.ca , https://twitter.com/#!/aiai_comms , www.facebook.com/aiai.pto , www.youtube.com/user/AIAIAdmin .
