Algoma U to Offer Community Economic and Social Development Spring Institute in Timmins
(TIMMINS, ON – March 17, 2016): Algoma University is pleased to announce that a special Spring Institute course focused on community development approaches to consultation and consent in Indigenous communities within Northern Ontario and beyond will be offered at the Timmins campus of Northern College, from June 19th to 23rd.
In addition to those studying in Algoma’s Bachelor of Arts in Community Development and Bachelor of Social Work degree programs in Timmins, the week-long institute will be of interest to professionals working in the area of community development and life-long learners interested in learning more about the important issues covered in this course.
The course will outline key processes, policies, practices, and issues related to prior consultation and Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) in First Nation and Indigenous communities in Canada and beyond. The course will be aimed at fostering skills in analysis of broader contexts of natural resource development and the extractive sector, including identifying multiple stakeholders implied in the FPIC process, while offering an introductory approaches to FPIC as a tool for communities.
Dr. Sheila Gruner, Chair of the Department of Community and Economic Development at Algoma University will be at Northern College and available to meet with those interested in learning more about the Spring Institute and the Community Development program on Tuesday, March 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.
