AFN-Canada Treaties Implementation Conference

The Assembly of First Nations and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) are convening a national AFN-Canada Treaties Implementation Conference on March 26-27, 2008, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The event is being hosted by the AFN Treaties portfolio holder, Regional Chief Lawrence Joseph, and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations. The conference theme is, “As Long as the Sun Shines.” As First Nations, we understand the profound importance of our Treaties. Yet, Canada does not have a policy on Treaty implementation. This gathering is an opportunity for us to renew our collective efforts at implementing historic Treaties. We can also share the knowledge, energy and determination of our Elders, leaders and citizens in a way that honours the true spirit and intent of our Treaties.

Conference participants will be able to actively discuss the parameters, issues, barriers and mutual benefits regarding the development of a new national Treaty implementation framework. It is important for Treaty First Nations and the Crown to share our visions and understandings about historic Treaties as we search for common ground and principles that will guide our Treaty relationship. We will be asking participants to share their views on what processes and mechanisms will work for Treaty implementation.

We look forward to seeing you at this important gathering.
