Award for teacher – Brantford Expositor

A local teacher has received this year’s Curriculum Development Award from the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario for her work on a new Grade 6 unit on Indigenous people and residential schools.

Sabrina Sawyer is Indigenous lead-teacher consultant for Indigenous Education for the Grand Erie District School Board. She wrote a unit called What Can I Contribute to Meaningful Reconciliation? that seeks to look at the events that led to residential schools being constructed and how the resulting history affected the relationships between Canada’s Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

She developed the resource by working with Six Nations and the Mississaugas of the Credit.
