(BC-First-Nations-Energy)

Canada’s natural resources minister has told a Vancouver forum that Aboriginal Peoples will be consulted on resource projects and decisions will be based on science.

Jim Carr highlighted the federal government’s introduction of new environmental assessment rules for major resource projects.

The rules cover two B-C projects, — Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline.

The forum brings together First Nations from across Canada to set priorities for working with the energy industry. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Team-Suspended)

The top-ranked junior boys basketball team has pulled out of the Victoria city playoffs after the entire team was suspended for bullying.

Victoria’s school board superintendent says an indecent photo was posted online showing an Oak Bay player posing with another boy during a road trip in January — leading to what Piet Langstraat (pete LANG’-strat) says was the significant bullying of a team member.

The entire team was suspended for the rest of the season because the principal believed most members took part in — or knew about — the bullying.

Basketball standings on the website of the Lower Vancouver Island School Sports Association showed Oak Bay High and Belmont Secondary were tied with six wins and one loss but Oak Bay had been ranked first because it had scored more points. (CFAX)

(BC-TransLink-CEO)

TransLink officials searched internationally for the new head of Metro Vancouver’s transit authority — but they only had to look as far as Seattle.

Kevin Desmond officially takes over as TransLink C-E-O on March 21st, replacing the interim C-E-O appointed after last year’s failed referendum for extra funding.

Desmond is currently the General Manager of King County Metro Transit in the Seattle area and TransLink says he grew ridership by 44 per cent while he was there.

It also says Desmond was part of three successful votes on transit funding in Seattle, including a 2014 ballot initiative that helped expand that system. (The Canadian Press, News1130)

(BC-Fatal-Accident)

A Victoria-area man charged after a passenger in the vehicle he was driving died in a crash two years ago has pleaded guilty to a lesser count.

Anurag Grover was originally charged with criminal negligence causing death and impaired driving causing death after his car hit a lamp post in Saanich in 2014.

He has now pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death with a date for sentencing not yet set.

Witnesses told police Grover’s car appeared to be travelling at around 130 kilometres-an-hour prior to the crash that claimed the life of 20-year old Amandip Sidhu of Victoria. (CFAX)

(BC-Pepper-Spray-Assault)

Langley R-C-M-P are asking for help in identifying a suspect accused of pepper spraying a fellow motorist in December.

Police say the driver of a car was travelling westbound on the Fraser Highway when a black Jeep Cherokee said to be following the victim flashed its high beam lights.

The two vehicles pulled over, and someone from the Jeep is alleged to have pepper sprayed the person in the car without saying a word.

Police describe the suspect as a Caucasian male in his 40’s with long brown hair. (CKNW)

(BC-Valentine-Campaign)

Police in Abbotsford are running a light-hearted Valentine’s Day campaign aimed at fighting distracted driving.

It’s the third year the force is running the “Love Them Enough Not To Call” campaign.

Participants can email police their pledge that they love their Valentine enough not to use an electronic device while driving.

Staff at the police department will call those Valentines on February 14th to tell them their loved one is thinking of them, and wish them a great day. (The Canadian Press)
